Wishes Do Come True…

Have you ever seen a book on NetGalley and thought…oh, that’s the book I want to read…and then you click on the link, and you see this message:

“This book is not currently available to request.”

And then there’s a little icon that says, “Wish for it.” And you click it, but you know nothing is going to happen…

Well.

Something happened. To me!

I got an email this morning, and it said my wish was granted! (No, not for Heartless..in my dreams, lol!)

Here’s the email that greeted me:

Here’s the book:

And here’s the blurb:

Toward a Secret Sky by New York Times bestselling author Heather Maclean is a new breed of YA novel: an intelligent adventure-quest crossed with a sweeping, forbidden love story. A mix of reality and possibility, this fast-paced thriller will appeal to fans of Stephenie Meyer and Dan Brown as it leads the reader on a breathless flight through the highlands of Scotland, the secret city under London, and history itself.
Shortly after 17-year-old Maren Hamilton is orphaned and sent to live with grandparents she’s never met in Scotland, she receives an encrypted journal from her dead mother that makes her and everyone around her a target. It confirms that her parents were employed by a secret, international organization that’s now intent on recruiting her. As Maren works to unravel the clues left behind by her mother, a murderous madness sweeps through the local population, terrorizing her small town. Maren must decide if she’ll continue her parents’ fight or stay behind to save her friends.

With the help of Gavin, an otherworldly mercenary she’s not supposed to fall in love with, and Graham, a charming aristocrat who is entranced with her, Maren races against the clock and around the country from palatial estates with twisted labyrinths to famous cathedrals with booby-trapped subterranean crypts to stay ahead of the enemy and find a cure. Along the way, she discovers the great truth of love: that laying down your life for another isn’t as hard as watching them sacrifice everything for you.

I am flabbergasted because I didn’t think that wish button did anything! Did you?

I am SO PSYCHED!!

Have any of you received a book you wished for? I’d really like to know!

Happy reading!!

  1. That’s awesome! 🙂 So happy for you.. and I didn’t know that the Wish button did that. I know I have pressed it a couple of times in the past but I figured it might be like a statistic gathering tool for publishers to see how popular the book could be. Good to know and happy reading 🙂

    1. Yeah, apparently it’s random! Who would’ve thought? I totally thought the same thing!! And maybe it was a screening device, or something?
I always wondered why someone would list their book on NetGalley and not make it available!! Made no sense to me!

    1. That’s why I shared this: it’s never done anything for me, either.
An hour later, I was denied for Roseblood. So it’s always a pick me up, then a letdown. I REALLY wanted to read Roseblood. Oh, well. I guess I can’t have it all, lol.
Would be super-awesome if it were for Heartless. But I won’t look a gift book in the mouth lol!

Yay!!! It’s like Christmas in September….which is now totally a thing haha. I received a copy of Summer of Sloane that way and it floored me because my blog was rather new at the time. I can’t wait to read what you thought of the book! Enjoy! 🙂

    1. Thanks, I didn’t either! I was like, what? Huh? Then I saw the book and remembered wanting to read it…I have pushed that button every time, thinking nothing would happen…I guess the odds happened to be in my favor. 👍

    1. I think I would’ve died on the spot if it had been Heartless…and I tried to request Roseblood and got denied…so it’s all about being lucky and taking chances, I guess.
I WISH I could get my hands on a copy of Heartless!

  3. Oh my GOODNESS! 1. I’ve seen this book floating around and the cover is beautiful. I’m a little jealous you get to read it 😉
    2. Its funny that you mentioned Heartless because that was the first book I thought of when I saw your post. Maybe my wish will come true. One can hope! Haha.

    1. NetGalley is a tricky little beast. You want to make sure that you request only what you have time to read, and don’t request ANY big titles when you start out because you WILL get denied. I wish I had known that…
And they can see how many denials to approves you get, so it helps to start with books that allow you to Read Now…they are auto-approvals and will build up your feedback score. Keep your feedback above 80% too, because that means you review what you read. And don’t got that request button so many times hat you lose count…if for some reason they approve you, you could end up like one of my friends and have 50 books…and her feedback score is in the 50s because of it. I would say don’t request until at least five to ten read now books reviewed. It will help your odds. And don’t be too depressed if they say no…some publishers have impossibly high standards. I still get declined for some big titles. And I’ve been working on my account for awhile.
Good luck on there! Didn’t see the other part of your comment until now! 😉

  4. It happened to me twice during my 13 months of blogging. The first time, I was over the moon as well and pestered everyone with my happy dances :D. The second time was last month where I was like…”Wtf, did I wish for this? I can’t remember it for the life of me!”. Aah, human nature, never appreciating things enough ;). But this one…ooh, this one I wished for as well, so this is hopefull! I looked at the cover and was sold :3. Can’t wait to see what you think of it!!

    1. Honestly, I had forgotten requesting it, lol!
But once I saw the book and read the blurb, it came back to me.
I hit than button so much because I didn’t think it did anything…now I’m going to make sure I wish only for books I desperately want…lucky for me, this one is one of those!
Twice, you lucky girl! High five from me! 🙌

      1. Luckily it was something you really wanted then indeed :D. No one likes having yet another book added to their ARC bundle by ‘accidentally’ having clicked on a wish button in a moment of greed :’). Whoop!

  5. Ohh this is great news, (and yeah I’d love an ARC of Heartless but I’m not sure that will happen, despite wishing for it!). It’s always great when a book you wished for, that you didn’t think you had a hope of getting, is made available for you.
Towards a Secret Sky sounds really good, I’ll be looking forwards to seeing your review for this book and I hope you enjoy it as well! 😀

    1. Yeah. I would have died of happiness if it had been Heartless. But alas, ’tis not in the cards for me…
Yeah, this one is definitely one I’m happy to check out. Sounds different than the others out there, I hope I love it…and get some time to read! 😉

    1. I am dying to read it…and it looks like I have so many books that need reading that some are going to have to be returned to the library. I just don’t have the time anymore to read as quickly as I did. I work and have reading for school (and some assignments I have to do for Tues, lol). I just wish I could pause time and catch up on my reading…there are days where I don’t get to read a word!
Thanks for the comment…I can’t wait to share it with y’all.

    2. I try not to, but I refuse to miss a single post by my friends…so right now I have about 360 emails…and I go in order so I don’t miss a single one!
So it might take me some time to reply! Like now, for instance! Lol! 😉

  6. Congratulations! That’s so exciting! (Even if it’s not Heartless. :p) I do remember once looking at The Tale of Kullervo and seeing you could only wish for it, and then checking back later to see that it was actually available for request. That was also a good day. 😀

    Yay! Congrats!!
I haven’t had any of my wishes granted 😦
I wished for Heartless and The Amateurs by Sara Shepard.
Heartless would have been a good one to be granted!
But I don’t really get the function of the wish button, it seems to be the same as requesting it but secretive and more selective lol.

    1. Yeah…I don’t get it either. All this proves to me is that it works. But it’s still a strange feature on a galley site!
Others should wish for it and see if they get it, too! I’m wondering if it is really truly random, or if they just wanted to make it seem really special to be approved.
I would love to get a galley of Heartless or Roseblood. I got declined for Roseblood, though. ☹️

Haha okay I have wished for it.
        We shall soon see!!

I have my fingers and toes crossed for Caraval!! I need that book in my life! Lol.
Roseblood sounds so good! I’m still waiting to hear back 😦
And Heartless I just never heard back about, I also need that book in my life lol. I think that is what makes the Wish feature so annoying, it doesn’t track it so you never know!!

        Liked by 1 person

    2. It IS annoying. I could wish for 50 books and get them all (hah! Like that would happen), so I wish there was a wish tracking feature! Lol! Get it? I wish? 😂
      I’m a dork. 🤓
Good luck with Caraval and Roseblood. If you get either, I’m going to wish I was your next-door neighbor so that I could “borrow” your device. 😉

        Haha got it.

I didn’t get roseblood, or the wish list book you got lol.
        But I got Caraval!!!
I wish you were my next-door neighbour too!! All the books I could borrow!!!
        😂😂😂

        Haha definitely not enough time!!
I think I will have more time soon, because I’m pretty sure we will be flooded soon lol. The rain never stops!! 😦

    3. Is it the rainy season where you are? It’s just getting to fall over here in Michigan. Though I’m hearing reports of crazy apocalyptic weather and snowfall which isn’t making me feel too confident about the days ahead…

It is supposed to be spring!!! But all there is at the moment is rain!!
I love rainy days and overcast weather, but this is ridiculous. everything is flooded and theres just mud everywhere and my horses are now sea horses!! Lol.

Ah the world is ending!!! Good luck for winter! It was a long one over here. Thankfully it only snows up the mountains! I don’t know if I would survive a winter with snow lol.
Do you get snow days if its really bad?
I’d love to see a white christmas!! lol. We all die at christmas its so damn hot!
Last christmas we had bush fires, started in my mums neighbours paddock and came right up to the back door, scary times!!

    4. Well, we only get snow days when it’s REALLY BAD outside, which sucks bc on some days I don’t feel comfortable driving!! I have to drive to school in white out conditions!!
It’s hot right now during your winter? Sucky!!
If your horses are sea horses, are the evolving? Are they Pokémon??
