Frostblood – Elly Blake (Review)

Title: Frostblood (Frostblood Saga #1)
Author: Elly Blake
Publisher: Little, Brown Books For Young Readers, 2017 (Jan 10)
Genre: YA Fantasy

**I received a copy of this book free from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**

This review can be found on my BlogTeacherofYA’s Tumblr, or my Goodreads page

My Review:

First off…I love both covers. #coverlove all day long. I love the UK cover on the left; I love the US cover on the right. I’d be in heaven if I owned both.

Before I go into the review, I want to talk about something that I haven’t mentioned here yet…many people on Twitter already know: I went to see Elly Blake at a book signing, along with Susan Dennard of Truthwitch/Windwitch, EK Johnston of A Thousand Nights/Spindle, and Kate Elliott of Court of Fives/Poisoned Blade.

I was in heaven.

From Left: Blake, Elliott, Johnston, and Dennard at the Signing

I couldn’t afford books, but I did scrounge and bought Frostblood. Blake was so nice and I know we are going to be good friends, as she understood my situation and was so nice about it. I almost cried when I met her. I’ll be seeing her with Stephanie Garber at Schuyler’s Bookstore on Feb 13 and I can’t wait. This was my first book event and I’m hooked. And I’m excited to see Elly again.

I was going to post a pic of the signed book, but it’s put away right now, along with my Instax pics that she signed for me. I don’t have a lot of room, but I found the perfect bookshelf (yay!) and it’s $80, so I’m selling some stuff on FB to be able to buy a place to put my books. In the meantime, they are in bags in stacks, placed carefully so they don’t get ruined in the meantime.

I plan on keeping a separate shelf/section/box for my portable classroom library, which is really getting some great titles. I’m not going to include signed copies bc kids like to be a little rougher with books. But the others that I have read are fair game bc I want to spread the YA love and get more students interested in reading. No more eye rolls! 🙄

Blake and Elliott posing for me right after the panel was over…they share the same editor!

Ok, so enough gushing. Let’s talk about Frostblood!

Ruby is a Fireblood: she was born with the ability to create fire from within. She’s unskilled because Fireblood are Hunted and must hide. Ruby and her mother have been hiding together…but when Ruby is alone while her mother is out healing the sick, Ruby practices in secret. If ever the soldiers come, she wants to be ready.

And the soldiers come. They bear the white arrow on their chest: the Frost King’s emblem. Ruby is taken, turned on by the town and the boy she thought cared about her. She’s taken to jail to await her execution. Only Frostblood may live in the land of the Frost King.

One night, though, two hooded men come in and break her out…but they have conditions. They want Ruby’s Fire to kill the Frost King. She is reluctant and does not trust them. But the only other option is death.

Ruby has her own reasons for wanting the king dead, so she reluctantly agrees. They take her to train as she is very rusty. One man, Arcus, his face always mostly covered, seems to have ill Will towards Ruby. She is accustomed to the disgust from Frostbloods, but as Ruby trains, she realizes Arcus seems to make her crazy…and she starts to like it. But can Fire and Frost really get along?

All Ruby knows is that it’s her task. She must be ready at all costs. Because the biggest cost may not be her own life…but Arcus’s as well.

Is It Classroom-Appropriate?

Yes! I think this would be a great book for the classroom: once again you have a society where being different makes you a target. There are dynamics that can be explored. Ruby’s fears and insecurities speak to students. The derogatory names that she is called parallel to those fighting for equal rights. There is also a lot of love in the book, as well as a lot of darkness. There are some really good themes to work with and discuss. I can imagine students becoming excited when reading this. I could see them reaching for the next book…Fireblood, which comes out (I believe) this fall.

However, this book can stand on its own. And that’s the nice part about it. You can use this book without having to wait for the series or worry about reading the whole trilogy and not having time. It is also an excellent book for reluctant readers because it is fast-paced and action-packed. Boys and girls both would enjoy this read. Lots of action to keep the reader entertained.

Age Range:

I really thought Lexile would have this book, but apparently it does not. So I am going to suggest that you could go as young as 12 without worry: there’s nothing torrid, no swearing, and no gory or graphic scenes. I think I might see if my niece wants to read this to see what she thinks. I know it would be just as effective for MG readers as it is for YA readers. It’s rare to find a book like that, and it’s a nice change to know that you can feel comfortable letting a young advanced reader pick this up and read it.

End Result:

Well, if you couldn’t tell by the tone of this post, I give Frostblood my second ★★★★★ of the year! I loved this book. I read it practically non-stop. I’ve seen some reviews that aren’t how I feel (I saw a one star from a popular blogger on Goodreads who claims it is the same story she’s read before. Others may not be as passionate about this as I am: I get that. But I do recommend it. I really do, especially if you have a young fantasy reader at home.

So here it is:

Happy Reading, y’all!

Five stars! Woo! That’s awesome! I’ve been anticipating this one since I was declined for it on NetGalley. (I’m so behind on my NetGalley books, I doubt they’ll give me anything else for a while haha!) Anyway, great review! I definitely can’t wait to get my hands on this one. And congrats on your signed book!! And your new bookshelf. 👍🏻👍🏻❤

    1. Thank you! Still saving for the bookshelf but love the book! Means the world to me!!
I actually got lucky with this on Netgalley: they send out those emails that say the first 500 to request it will get it? Well, it worked! I hadn’t been on NG in awhile and then there was the email! I was so jazzed.
Now I have that copy and a physical copy…but I want FIREBLOOD NOW!! I’d bug Elly about a copy, but she hasn’t finished it, so I can’t!

    2. Oh, yeah…I’m staying off for now! I was finally at 80%, and then an auto-approval checked out a book I didn’t want! And I was just going to wing it off other people’s reviews…but there’s only like, two, out there! Ugh. Widgets can be good…but they can also be bad. I’m not going to ever click on an unknown link again!
I did request Blood Rose Revellion, Empress of a Thousand Suns, and something I can’t even remember, but they’ll probably stay pending forever!

I went through a request binge on all those books too! Like Empress of a Thousand Skies, Daughter of the Pirate King, Blood Rose Rebellion, and like a ton more… but I doubt I’ll get approved because I’m so behind on my other NetGalley books. But I figured I’d try! I really hope to get approved for Empress though.

    3. Well, you’ve got some awesome taste!
I got declined for Pirate King…but I hate pending stuff! I did get A Crown of Wishes, the second in The Star-Touched Queen series, and I was over the moon. I guess it just depends on the pub. Some seem more likely to approve me than others. That’s why I’m doing the Netgalley challenge: to clean off my shelves. But I only have 7 books out…it’s just I don’t have a lot of feedback yet…maybe 28 books total?
      Good luck on approvals! 😊🤞

Thanks! I just opened my email to see I was actually approved for a few books I just requested the other day. I couldn’t believe it.

Here are the YA titles I was approved for:
        1. Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller
        2. Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson
        3. Noteworthy by Riley Redgate
        4. How to Make a Wish by Ashley Herring Blake
        5. Follow Me Back by A.V. Geiger

And here are the non-YA titles I was approved for that you may like:
        1. The Bedlam Stacks by Natasha Pulley
        2. Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward
        3. The Goddesses by Swan Huntley

  2. I can imagine how great it must have been on the panel!
And I am so glad you enjoyed this book. I also saw some not so good reviews on Goodreads, but I guess people who read a lot of ya fantasy would find some parts of story familiar, but in my case, since I don’t read THAT many ya fantasy books through the year, it wouldn’t be a problem. (just like with Red Queen).
When we’re at ya fantasy, I noticed I really started missing that genre (and ya in general), so it wouldn’t surprise me if I start binge reading everything ya again, just like before…

    1. Yeah, I saw a review by Ellie May, who I finally stopped following bc my friend request has been pending way too long…she knocked this book hard! She gave it one star. I think you shouldn’t measure other books by what’s out there unless someone was to try to copy another book. This book is as original as I can tell: Ruby is a solid character and the things we like in YA fantasy are all there in the book. If you liked Red Queen, you’ll definitely love this! (I did but I like this WAY MORE and the main character is more complex).
So I do hope you get a chance to read this because I think Elly is going to be a force to be reckoned with! I can’t wait for book two!

      1. Ohh, I just saw how Emily May reated it 1 star. I follow her. How come you unfollowed her?
I can see my friend Lola also gave it 1 star. :/
Didn’t read any of those reviews, to be fair.
I haven’t read Red Blood, but I remember how it was criticized for copying other books.
Since I don’t read ya fantasy often, I’m not sure it would be a problem for me.

        Liked by 1 person

    2. I followed her only by accident. I friend requested her…and I figured maybe she just didn’t get it. But when your request is pending for a year? No thank you. And she’s so negative now. I don’t really ever “follow” anyone: I either get to be your friend or not, you know? When I get people following me without friend requests I’m flattered, but if they friend me, I almost always accept.
I get that she has a lot of friends. But don’t leave me hanging then. So I stopped following recently. Prob right after I saw the Frostblood review. I had commented and all sorts of stuff but she ignored it. Oh well. More time for real friends! 😘😘😘

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Ohh, I get it, but I don’t think she has space for more friends.
I was on pending for Amanda Hocking for 2 years before she accepted my request.
But then again, I sent friend request to one girl from my country, and she has only few friends, she never accepted my request so I stopped following her.
Emily May is good reviewer in my opinion, but I don’t like how she posts same reviews so many times so people would see and like them. I man, she has 500+ likes on every review, why such a need for attention?
Don’t get me wrong, I also like getting likes and I understand that reviews with more likes are ones you see first, but still I don’t get why posting the same review over and over…

        Liked by 1 person

    3. It just bugged me. I thought she didn’t have room but she has 5,001 friends. So it must mean she can have more than 5,000. And I don’t know: I just feel like I use Goodreads more now for friend reviews…I care what YOU guys think; I don’t care what some blogger I don’t know thinks, you know?
You guys are my go-to for books. Besides, it’s not like she’ll miss me, lol!

  3. Great review, Stephanie! 🙂 I haven’t read this one yet but most reviews I’ve seen are super positive and I can’t wait to try it out.
I’m glad you had fun at the signing! So great that those four awesome authors were there and you got to meet them all (although I admit – shamefully – I have yet to try their work, I know they’re all great from the way fans gush over them so much hahaha)

    1. Honestly, I had only read Elliott’s books and I was faking my way through! Though I tend to know what I like, so that helps!
But I’m just glad I got the chance to meet them…I’ve never done anything like that because I’m not a very social person (I know, what?), so meeting them was like trying to get to know what authors are like in real-life. AND THEY ARE SO NICE!!
I can definitely recommend this one, but I haven’t read the others except for Elliott (she’s good too), so I can’t recommend just yet. Hopefully very soon!

    1. Thank you! I’m so glad too! I only know of one more that I’m going to, unless Erin Summerhill decides to come to Michigan. As many authors don’t! Lol.
I hope you adore this book! I’m crossing my fingers 🤞!

  4. I love the image art! But I’m not so excited to pick up the book, because it’s sounding like the usual storyline, I’ve come to notice, from books in this genre. I love your review and when the time comes, your review will be it’s saving grace.

  5. Great review Stephanie. I got an ARC of Frostblood, read it a while back and really loved it; as soon as it was released I went out a grabbed a copy just so I could have a finished version on my bookshelf. I can’t wait for the second book to be released (I think it’s September/October time that it’s coming out). Have you seen the covers yet, both UK and US? They look amazing and I can’t decide which I like better either! 😀
Wow it’s amazing you got to meet Elly Blake, and all the other authors too, it looks like it was a great event to be a part of.

I’m so glad we both liked this…just more proof we have EXCELLENT taste and know our recs to each other will be perfect!! 😊😊😊
I think I read your review…but if not, since I’m so far behind, I will see it soon!

      1. That’s all right, and yeah I know that feeling all too well. Will you be going to more signing events like these?
Definitely excellent taste, and I am really glad you enjoyed this book because it’s a favourite of mine actually. 😀
I think you possibly did, but I posted it a while ago now so I can’t be sure!

    2. One other event that I know of: Stephanie Garber of Caraval and Elly Blake (yay) are going to be at Schuyler’s Books in Lansing on the 13th? I think…I’m supposed to go with the chick who went with my mom and I last time so my mom doesn’t have to drive and sit around…but if she flakes, I still plan on going.
That’s the only other one I’ve heard of…I know Erin Summerhill hinted she might come out in March, which would be awesome, but not a lot of authors make stops in Michigan; they usually just go to Illinois and call it a day…and a lot of people drive there but I’m not comfortable driving out of state by myself!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. That sounds amazing, I’m sure you’ll have a great time at that event and Stephanie Garber’s book is beyond amazing so it will be great getting to meet her as well.
Well it sounds like you got some great authors over to Michigan recently, hopefully there’ll be more making a trip there so you can go and see them as well! 😀

    1. Umm. Kind of?
Red Queen has the silvers and the Reds. But the Reds are part of society and though not accepted, they are able to live. This book has the frost and the Fire, but there are no fires left…Ruby is the only one.
I haven’t finished the series with Red Queen yet, but I guess I can see some parallels. I think that Ruby is more dynamic as a character. I think if I had to pick one, it would be this….I guess I think it’s better. IMO. 🤔
Not knocking Red Queen by any means…but this one moved a lot more quickly for me and I’m dying to read the sequel.

    1. Well, I haven’t bought it yet! I found one I liked a lot, but I need to save up for it. So once I have it, pics will def be posted!
It was great to meet them bc apparently there aren’t usually that many authors at an event like this one: most of them were in town for a comic convention called ConFusion, so they went to that and then showed up at the event! It was awesome and I keep meaning to take pics of my Instax pics I had them sign so I can show them off!
But I forget a lot at my age!
      Thanks!!

    2. Oh, they are great and I do go…but it’s winter here so there aren’t really many this time of year. I usually love antiques or go to thrift stores but it’s hard bc I’m looking for something specific. Like tall but has a lot of room.
I hate buying new furniture bc it’s never made as well as antiques…but Walmart had a nice one that will fit my room and match. I have an old one in the basement that’s more like a hutch: just not built well for holding books, you know?

    1. I feel blessed that my mom was willing to drive me, and Theresa (a person I had only known through Twitter), 2.5 hours to go to a bookstore in Beverly Hills, MI just to meet four authors, I also didn’t have money for the book but spent it anyway just so I could get it signed. Later, Blake pulled me aside and asked, and I told her I did buy it though I had no money, and she told me I didn’t need to: she had brought a copy for me! I wanted to cry. If it wasn’t signed, I would have returned the book in my hands and taken Blake’s generous offer. But I had already taken the book through and had it signed. But the idea that she would give me, a fan and stranger, a copy of her book because I couldn’t afford it…that touched me. It really did. Now she is my favorite author, not only for her writing chops, but for her big heart.
So I’m glad I get to see her again…I told her I would give her a signed pic from me! She’s my fan, too, lol! I just love it.
So I’m really Haley that I loved this book…it would have sucked to have disliked it after all that, but I had a feeling it was my kind of book.
      And I love that GIF!

  9. Great review, Stephanie!! I’ve seen nothing but rave reviews for this one and yours has just made me even more excited to read it. This book sounds like it’s right up my alley. I’m going to have to make time to read it as soon as I can buy a copy. Also, that’s so exciting about the author event! I’ve been to one signing before but never an event with several authors. That had to have been a lot of fun. 😁

I hope you love this too! I really found it to be one of the few faves of all time. The problem with most people and this book is that they compare it to other books!
I never compare stuff to other books unless it’s a blantant rip-off. This book is wholly original to me. I hope so much that you end up loving it too! 🤞

      1. With everything I’ve seen I have a feeling that I will love it. 😁
I think a lot of the comparison was to Red Queen for this book, wasn’t it? I can definitely see why it would be compared but I think it’s such a small thing that I can’t see full on comparing it, if that makes sense. I have to admit I’ve had moments where I have compared books but I try not to. And when a book is compared to another as a marketing thing I try to take it with a grain of salt. There’s always similar themes in books like these but most I’ve read are pretty unique beyond those themes. And this one really does seem to stand on it’s own outside of any comparison. 😊

        Liked by 1 person

    2. I’m glad you still want to read it. I’ve heard the Red Queen comparison. It’s just similar in that Red Queen has Silvers and Reds and Frostblood has Frostbloods and Firebloods. I think that’s really all you can compare it to, you know? And you know, fantasy does have that bit in common with other books in the genre: you’ve got one group against another (i.e. Werewolves vs Vampires, Gifted vs Non-Gifted, This group vs That group). It’s a common theme. But that doesn’t mean the books are close to being the same. I’ll be honest: Red Queen was ok, but it wasn’t the best book in the world. Enjoyable but slow.
Frostblood, however, was fast-paced and interesting. I could never figure out the next move. It kept me guessing. I liked that. I liked Red Queen enough, but I LOVED Frostblood.
I can’t wait to see what you think: I remember when Stealing Snow was getting bad reviews, and I read it just to read it…and it was bad, like really bad. But I’m always willing to give something a try! Well, most of the time! 😂😂😂

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yeah, I figured that was the only way they were similar. Of course I’ve only read Red Queen at this point but beyond they seem like completely different books. I actually really enjoyed Red Queen but completely agree about it being a slow book. Glass Sword however was an iffy book for me. I’ve heard a lot about how fast-paced this one was so I’m looking forward to that.
I’ll let you know when I do read it! It depends for me. If there are enough bad reviews I’ll stay away but certain books I can be intrigued enough to want to pick up. 😊

        Liked by 1 person

    3. Yeah I only read Red Queen, too. I started Glass Sword but had to take it back to the library. I haven’t been in the mood to read it really. I’m sure once I am, I’ll be able to get a copy at the library!
I honestly can’t wait for Fireblood, though! That’s one I hope Elly sends me as an ARC!

For some reason you were in my Spam folder…maybe bc of the link? Do you know how to do a pingback? I didn’t know at first…all you do is when you list the “nominees” for your tag, you make the names links to the blog…so if I nominated you, I would clink on the link button, put in your web address for your “About” page (or whatever page you want it to show up on), and I’ll get a comment from you letting me know I’ve been nommed!
It confused me at first bc I didn’t know how to do it. You can still do it this way if you want and I’ll keep an eye on my Spam folder just in case! 😘

And I do check my Spam folder in my emails! 🙂 But is there another Spam folder I don’t know about? 😉

    3. Not the Spam folder in your email…though I do get email notifications and just delete what I don’t have time to read. But that’s me, and I have about 700 of them now. But I’m talking about on your blog, at the top of the screen, there is an admin link, and it will show you all the comments you’ve gotten and what is pending and what is spam. There might be comments in there from new people! Let me know on Twitter messenger if you need help finding it! 😘
