My Review:

As y’all know, I’m a big fan and supporter of indie authors. Without us, they can’t thrive or even survive among the big 5 publishing conglomerates. They reach out to us, especially the bloggers, with their books, and they ask so nicely if we would review a copy of their baby. Some bloggers are so busy that they can’t. I get it: there’s so many books out there and only so much time. I, however, thought Burn’s book sounded just like something I would die to read from the big pubs, so I said, ok, send me a copy and I’ll check it out.

Guys, I’m glad I did.

This story hooks you. From the very beginning. It’s good. I was surprised. Let me tell you a little about this…

So Max has visions. Horrible ones. Apocalyptic ones. Makes sense that he would think he was going crazy. After a suicide attempt that, to his disappointment, fails miserably, he winds up in the Hanover Insitute…a mental institution.

At 17, Max has had it rough: mom deceased, dad long gone, and a foster father only there to get the checks from the state. Max has no one…but he’s used to it.

When a kind doctor won’t give up, Max finally starts to trust enough to open up: the visions of a world on fire…and a carousel waiting in an abandoned amusement park. What does it mean? Max and the doc seem to both agree that Max is broken.

However…

Three kids are looking for Max. Without him, they won’t make it. As they sit at the abandoned carousel, waiting for Max to get the message, they realize that Max isn’t exactly in a place where he can be reached.

Because Max’s visions? Well…they’re not exactly hallucinations. More like a prophecy….

And they need Max before it’s too late.

Is It Classroom-Appropriate?

Yes! The book is only 161 pages (which is kind of sad because I honestly wanted more!), and I can see this as a book that teens, both girls and boys, would enjoy. With a hint of Ender’s Game (just a hint, mind you…not enough to even compare, but it came to mind at one point), this story will appeal to the reluctant reader in all students. It’s quick, full of action, and easy to read. It also brings up a moral dilemma: should you care for the people that cause you harm?

Definitely full of classroom discussion and it’s short enough that it could be a week-long lesson plan. I can’t see any drawbacks to using this in a Freshman setting…if the swearing was removed. More on that in a minute.

Age Range:

There’s some swearing, so there’s that. A couple of F bombs and some “shits” in there…I practically forgot about them because that’s almost teenage vernacular…well, honestly, it’s almost most venacular. So I almost didn’t even realize it was there. There could be a “clean” classroom copy if the words were switched out to other words…maybe damn or something similar. Swearing is tricky. Some great books have swearing. And kids have heard it all before. (They have: trust me)

There’s nothing inappropriate otherwise…so I’m torn. I would say stick to high school for this book. I recommend readers 15 and up, and that’s simply because of the swearing. If it was changed or removed, then it could very well be a middle grade book, too. As it stands, as long as it was approved by the curriculum, I would use it in class. And I would still let teens read it, mainly because the story is too good. But I leave that up to how comfortable you are with swear words.

End Result:

I loved it. I really did. I want a sequel now.

I rate The Enemy Within ★★★★☆. Solid read, especially if you’re a light sci-fi fan like me, who likes science fiction but isn’t exactly able (or willing) to learn Klingon or become a member of the United Federation of Planets (Star Trek reference, guys!). So that means…(yes, I’m going to deface this edgy, science fiction book with my happy rating system):

Will you give Scott Burn’s book a chance? Only $.99 on Kindle, so what are you waiting for? Seriously! That’s prime entertainment for $1!!!

Happy Reading, y’all!

      1. I certainly hope so! Thank you 🙂

Yes, getting the necessary exposure and recognition is no easy matter for self-published authors (or even authors in general), leading to us perhaps missing a lot of masterpieces… great thoughts for helping them out and getting involved in spreading wonderful stories 😀

  3. I’m glad you can find the time to support indie authors. High five! I do have a few titles I need to read too. Prophecy is like seeing the future right? it does sounds interesting.. and you’re right, this book is a bit short.. The cover looks cool though! (I like how you say.. F bombs and some “shits” hahaha..)

    1. Yeah…I have to warn about the swearing but I can still be a little silly about it!
Yes, prophecies are seeing the future. This one is a nice read, really quick, and completely action-packed. There’s a little romance and a lot of character. It’s amazing he could put so much into such a short novel.
He told me he might go with a publisher next time bc it’s so hard to self-publish, and I could see him becoming a big name like James Dashner from The Maze Runner or Orson Scott Card from Ender’s Game. He’s def got talent!

      1. Self-published is hard? Is that like going to Amazon to get it published? On Goodreads, I noticed some authors has “Goodreads Author” and some just have their name. What does that mean? Some author published at a publisher with their name on it, so does that mean they own the publishing house? Sorry if you don’t know the answer.. I just wonder.. haha..

    2. Authors who publish their own books on Amazon will have the publisher listed as Amazon, unless they create their own brand (like Scott might make Burns publishing). Otherwise, if it says Amazon, 99% of the time it is self-published.
Then there’s the small pubs like Curiosity Quills and Blaze and Swoon Reads. Oh, and Xpresso Books. They make a living taking so much percent and giving the author the rest. They promote the book for maybe a year, but then after that the author is kind of on their own.
So sometimes it can be better to self-publish than do the small publisher bc you at least have more control over your book.
Now, if it says Goodreads author next to their name, that just means they signed up as an author with Goodreads. That way they get like a business account with a “Follow Author” tag and a list of their books. That’s alll that means.
Did I help? You can always ask! 😊

      1. Yes. Thanks! 🙂 I see why you don’t read any books from Curiosity Quills and lose your auto-approval with them. I was looking through the list earlier and I didn’t feel interested to read any of them..

  4. This sounds like a really good book Stephanie. I’m definitely glad to see you enjoyed it so much, especially after thinking before you picked it up that it’s a book you’d enjoy reading from one of the big publishing houses. I’m definitely intrigued by the concept myself, and 161 pages is short so it must have been a quick read. Is there a sequel being released maybe?
    Great review. 🙂

    1. Thank you!
I asked him about a sequel, and he said he’s in the works with another book, but it doesn’t sound like this…he also said he prob won’t self-publish again…that’s it’s a “bear,” which is so true, bc of all they have to do. I find so few really GOOD indie authors and when I do find the good ones, I just want to celebrate and push them into, like, Penguin’s hands and be like, “Publish this, fools!” Any pub, you know?
I can see him being a future Dashner or Westerfeld. I’m keeping him in my mental Rolodex of awesome indie authors that need shout-outs. Maybe I’ll do a post? 🤔

      1. That’s all right. 🙂
Well I’m sure after this one you’ll read anything else he writes as well! And oh I can imagine that about self-publishing, but it is a great way to get your book out there and read by people. I’m not sure how self-publishing works vs being taken on by a big company, but who knows what the future holds for this author.
A post may be a good idea, what like an indie author spotlight or something?

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Yeah…like an indie author spotlight! Exactly!
Like I would list the top ten indie authors (or underrated if I can’t find that many indie ones) and their books.
And I really want to get back into cover doubles again! I have so many waiting to be shared! There’s one girl: she’s on so many covers that I have given up! She’s on everything! It’s INSANE!

  5. Oh this one sounds good. A little light sci-fi sounds like just the thing right now. And go you! ❤ Indie authors. I feel too often they receive a bad rap. I have even had not so nice comments left on my blog when I choose to feature them on blog. I need to remember this one!

    1. That’s horrible! I had one friend tell me that indie authors couldn’t be any good because they weren’t published by a “big” publisher! She seems to have changed her mind, though, because I’ve recently seen her feature indie books. So hopefully people are spreading the word. I think it’s great you spotlight indie authors. Heck, Jill from rantandraveaboutbooks is now an indie author technically!
This is a cool one. And it’s so reasonably priced. I would have spent $.99 on this. I usually don’t read books under 200 pages bc I don’t think there’s enough time to develop the story, but he did it perfectly.
I still want a sequel, though! Lol.
Let me know if you end up picking it up! If you’re interested, I could always shoot him an email too if you would like a review copy as well. Or maybe I can ask if I can share mine?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I would say send him an email, but I am seriously so far behind at this point I just cannot fathom the idea of more at the moment 😂 I will probably hit you up when and if I ever get caught up. I refuse to even visit netgalley right now haha. So bad!

  6. I really like the sound of this one and I love how it’s a shorter read. I’ll definitely be adding it to my TBR. And I completely agree about indie authors! So many of my favorites started out as indie authors. There are so many hidden gems out there, in my opinion. If I had time I would be taking on some indie review books because I’ve had authors contact me but sadly I don’t. I just need more time for reading lol. Great review as always, Stephanie!! 😊💕

    1. Thank you!
As it stands, I’ll have to start turning some authors down. I just have too many books to read of my own, and from Netgalley. I love reading and reviewing for indie authors, but I just can’t find the time anymore, so it’s gotta slow down.
I get so many requests, and I end up leaving many unanswered just bc they aren’t my genre or cup of tea, and I feel horrible saying no.
      You know what I mean?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. You’re welcome!! 😊
I completely get what you mean. At first I never wanted to say no because it’s so exciting and I want to help promote but after a while I ended up having to put a note on my blog that requests were closed. Between life and all the other books it really is hard to find time. Also, you’re definitely not the only one who leaves some requests unanswered. I do that too. 🙈

  7. As the author of the book, I just wanted to chime in for a moment and say Stephanie is AWESOME for the support she gives indie writers. And it’s so nice to see so many people feel the same way. This was very cool to come across this afternoon. And if anyone wants to know a little more about me and what I work on, feel free to stop by my website:

Thanks again all – love to hear what you think if you have time to give Enemy a read. Cheers,

  8. Omg!!! This sounds like it is up my ally. I haven’t read a good sci fi book in months. And personally, I think the improper language gives the book character! 😉 (not advising anyone to use it or say it, I mean we have heard it all right?) . Great review!

    1. We DO all hear it! Just have to advice in case others may not like it, you know?
It’s a great read…Scott commented and asked people interested to feel free and contact him…it’s only $.99 too so I think it’s totally worth the chance!
      Thanks for commenting! 😊😊

    1. Thank you! We need to recognize that they are also very talented and the publishing world is very competitive. Burn’s book is just as good, if not better, than other published books out there.
I hope I make even a small impact to help. 😊🤞
