My Review (#1)

So I didn’t get the one with this pretty cover at the library. My copy had a plain blue cover with a tiny graphic, which means I had the original 1997 release. But I’m sorry, I couldn’t bear to put that ugly thing on this page. Like Drew @ TheTattooedBookGeek, I should do a cover challenge (Friday Face-off) and show you all the different covers this book went through so that we can all decide which one is the best. (I love those posts). This book, since it’s been around for 20 years, has been through its share of covers.

But enough about that. I finished this book awhile ago…but it has taken me forever to want to write this review. I can’t even do this one in my traditional format…so I decided to combine it with another book that was a bit shorter and try something new.

So we will see how this goes!

Are any of you familiar with McKinley’s book, Beauty? It’s more of a middle grade book…it was one of my faves as a kid. Apparently this book was a retelling of McKinley’s book. She didn’t like the way she left off…so she wanted to retell it from another angle, McKinley is known for her retellings, and I had only read Beauty. But I loved Beauty (pictured next). So I gave this one a try, thinking it would be a grown-up version of the original.

Ugh. I was right I guess…it was a “grown-up” version…if you consider a stiff, flowery-prosed, confusing plot a “grown-up” version. This book was trying to be more than it was. It was a YA book trying to play dress up in mama’s heels. It was….just ugh.

The story is this: traditional Beauty and the Beast meets magic (duh), a huge obsession with roses, and a beast that has no personality whatsoever. Same set-up: Rose is the daughter but she has two sisters named (I’m not kidding you) Jeweltongue and Lionheart. WTF? Seriously? And her name is Rose? Why not Rosehips McGee at this point? Makes more sense with the other two bizarre names. And Rose loves…you guessed it! Growing roses! Wow! Father goes broke, they move, yada yada yada he ends up in the Beast’s palace…etc etc he’s forced to send Roe in his place. We know the story by now.

What was irritating was that it was IDENTICAL to B&TB in every way except for long descriptive passages that made me fall asleep and magic that is never explained. No animals but there’s food. The house provides everything you need. Rose misses her sisters so much but dreams about them every night, though it never occurs to her that she’s actually seeing real events. It’s just inconceivable hogwash. I hate to say it, but this is the worst retelling of them all.

I want to tell you the most frustrating thing of the book…but it’s a spoiler. Now, this book is 20 years old, and though I hate to give away spoilers, (if you really want yo read this, just skip the rest of this paragraph bc I can’t keep this to myself: it’s just too weird), I have to confess the ending that makes no sense whatsoever. Spoiler alert: the Beast STAYS a beast even though he has a choice to become a man!! How is that supposed to work out?? I hated that decision the most of all.

Ok, you can look now.

Example of the writing that drove me absolutely insane:

“She looked up at once, pierced to the heart by the sorrow in his voice and knowing, from the question and the sorrow together, that he had no notion of what had just happened to her, nor why. From that she pitied him so greatly that she cupped her hands again to hold a little of the salamander’s heat, not for serenity but for the warmth of friendship. But as she felt the heat again running through her, she knew at once it bore a different quality. It had been a welcome invader the first time, only moments before; but already it had become a constituent of her blood, intrinsic to the marrow of her bones, and she heard again the salamander’s last words to her: Trust me. At that moment she knew that this Beast would not have sent such misery as her father’s illness to harry or to punish, knew too that the Beast would keep his promise to her, and to herself she made another promise to him, but of that promise she did not yet herself know. Trust me sang in her blood, and she could look in the Beast’s face and see only that he looked at her hopefully.”

I tried. I really did. So no more here for me…I’m just going to cut to the chase. I give Rose Daughter ★★☆☆☆. And I really didn’t want to rate anything that low, but I just…I just can’t.

Author: M.C. Frank
Publisher: Createspace, 2015 (Nov 25)

My Review (#2)

I included this one with the other review not because it was bad, but because it was a shorter book than I’m used to. Actually, this book was quite good! And I mean, look at the cover! 😍❤️😍❤️😍❤️
I met Frank and I think she’s an amazing artist and writer. I am currently reading her newest book Lose Me, which is a contemporary YA novel. But I had this copy for awhile and I just couldn’t put off reading it any longer. It was just too tempting with the synopsis. And since it is a short book, and it has two more installments, I’m going to try to sum it up without giving too much away.

Felix arrives at the North Pole to fix the clock that will be ringing in the New Year, 2525. He has left his military school to respond to a message from The Clockmaster, who says he is Felix’s “grandfather,” whatever that means.

Astra arrives at the North Pole as she runs from the people hunting her, and falls through the ice. She is rescued by a polar bear and taken to the Clockmaster’s shack, where Felix has been waiting. In this new world, men and women are separated, books are eradicated, and pills keep the people in line. Except for Astra, an escapee, and now Felix, who has run out as he waits for the Clockmaster to come.

As Astra and Felix both stay holed up in the shack, waiting for what to do next, they discover a hidden library that tells the story about the old ways…and as Felix watches Astra, he begins to see his “perfect” world is not so perfect if people like her can be locked away from the world.

I loved this. It was short (approx 150 pages) and it ended on a cliffhanger, so I’m dying for the next installment. I love dystopian novels and this one has me completely intrigued and hooked. I can’t give too much away…but I will encourage you to check out M.C. Frank on her Tumblr page, LittleRedDoll, with her amazing art and books! Or go to her author page with her books and blog at MCFrankAuthor.com.

So far, I give No Ordinary Star ★★★★☆. Translated into my rating System, that would obviously be…

So I hope you didn’t mind me combining two book reviews in one. I didn’t want to end on a negative note with Rose Daughter, thr book I’ve been dreading to review, and No Ordinary Star pulled me out of the funk. I can’t wait to read this series and own it for my classroom library. I’d pass on the McKinley book, but I do have other works by her to read that I picked up on sale from Amazon, so I may give her work another try,

On a separate note…

***On a separate note, last week was my birthday (all bookish presents can be sent to me anytime!) last Wed the 8th, and I’m a little older, a little wiser. I wanted to say I love all my blogger bunnies and I have received so much support through this move and on Twitter! I have been receiving excellent donations for the classroom library and it’s just been so wonderful that I had to thank you all somehow! So I’m having a GIVEAWAY COMING UP (yay!)…first for a cover reveal next week, and then for hitting 1K followers on Twitter (and growing), as well as SO MANY followers on my blog! I’m thinking a book or maybe any choice to BD? Let me know in the comments what you would like to see from me in a giveaway and we will make it happen (thanks to an upcoming tax return!). I want to give back to all of you who have followed me and have had faith in this little blog corner.***

My Real Cake Last Saturday!

  1. Oooo, a Greenwillow classic! I’d not heard of Rose Daughter, but I like that cover a lot. I’m curious about whatever ugly cover you mentioned. 😀 😀 😀 I think my sister read Beauty years ago, but I can’t remember what she thought of it. I never read it. And probably won’t!

Tax refund for the win! Your cake is so pretty (and it looks tasty). Nice job!

Have a wonderful weekend, Stephanie. =)

    1. Thanks, Alyssa!
Oh the cover was ugly. If you Google the title of the book it comes right up…blue with a tiny square on top with the title…ugh. 😑
I’m so excited to buy books! Money needs to get here ASAP! Shopping time! Oh yeah!
That cake was so unbelievably good! My mom put peeps on it to make it “fancier!” 😂😂😂
Love it when you stop by!! 😘

  2. Oh my god happy birthday Stephanie. I hope you had an amazing day and got some bookish gifts that you could open on the day as well! 😀 ❤
Also great reviews for these books. I think I read Sunshine (could be wrong on the title there) by Robin McKinley and it was an OK book, couldn't tell you much about it now, but I never felt the need to read any others and after this review I probably won't either. If the rest of the book is like the quote you included I can see how it drove you insane.
I'm glad the other book was much better for you, the cover is absolutely gorgeous so if we're judging books by covers I'm not surprised it was a great read! 😀

    1. Thank you!! Yes, I got two books that made me happy! But my best bday gift will be that tax return coming any day now!
Sunshine is right. I own a couple of them bc they were on sale and I remembered loving Beauty. The WHOLE BOOK was like that! I kept falling asleep and waiting for a twist! Nope.
The other one just needs an edit here or there and I’m hoping in the final copy they will be there…but not annoying enough to distract (like a comma vs semicolon and that kind of thing). That cover makes me so happy. That’s one I could stare at for days. She does her own covers! So amazing really. I can’t wait for book two!

      Liked by 2 people

      1. That’s all right, and ohh that’s great news about the tax return, guess that was a little bit of a birthday surprise right? 🙂
Yep, thought so but I couldn’t be sure, have you read that one? That sucks about this book, especially given you loved Beauty so much.
And yeah I guess in the end those aren’t big things, and they probably will be caught before mass publication or something. I dunno how these things work. Oh wow that’s even more impressive. I wish I could create art like that.

    2. I haven’t read anything else by her besides Beauty and this one. I hope I like another one by her…someone commented that she is kind of up and down with her books. So apparently some are better than others! 🤷‍♀️
Yeah, that was def a nice bday present! After being broke for so long, I’m allowing myself some fun money. Not a ton, but some.
I cannot believe her art! She is a little obsessed with Jane Austen and has redone Pride and Prejudice’s cover, and has made a coloring book! Her site is filled with her art and I’m a big fan of her covers…it’s what drew me to her in the first place (besides the book description and the fact that if you write a review for her book, she will send you a physical copy!)

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Maybe, I guess in that case you were just kind of unlucky picking up on of her books that wasn’t as good then. A shame after you really enjoyed Beauty.
Well even if it’s not a ton it’s always nice when you come into money somewhat unexpectedly.
I’ll have to check out her website then. If the rest of her art is like this cover then it’s going to be more than worth checking it out! 😀

  3. Ah, this is the post my face-off post was linked to!😂 eloquently worded about the terrible cover crabby, very politely put, you could do a face-off for it, 20 years is a long time for a book so I’d guess there’s plenty of covers in various styles.

Cool reviews though not books for me…..maybe one day we’ll see a Drew suitable book on the blog!😂

    1. One day…
      Ah, crabby…such an “endearing” nickname…
I saw enough to where I was thinking of doing a face-off post. I was inspired by you of course! At least a lot of her other books are adult fantasy so maybe something Drew-worthy? Hmm…🤔

    2. It would have to be fabulous and have a love interest!
And most people call me Teach or Steph (you were calling me Stephy and that’s fine) but I really wish you hadn’t latched onto “crabby!”
      I should have known…::shakes head::
      🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

    3. Thank you, kind sir. Crabby denotes too many bad things: grumpy person who’s snappy and/or a person with an STD. 😂
I’m a romantic! Even though I’ve been burned in love over and over and over and over and over…to the tenth power. Last one after 6 YEARS dumped me in a text and disappeared off the face of the earth. Like, for real. Have no idea what happened to him.
Want to have a mad romance and get married…though at my age I’m just readying myself for spinsterhood and lots of cats (😫😫😫) and I don’t even want more than one. It’ll just happen. 😂

    4. You’re right! Not very YA at all. But then again, I’m no longer a YA! 😂
I think the same goes for girl bookworms…we find our romance in books (‘cept for romance books themselves, and in that case you can quote me as saying, “Eww, yuck!” as I cover my eyes to avoid the ab pics on the jacket).
I think I’m a product of the Disney princess generation. Damn Disney screwed me up!! 💪😠
As long as a boy doesn’t mind a book in my lap in bed, he’s a winner. Though I should prob set my sights higher as they obviously backfired in the past. (New rule: hygiene is a must! More than a week w/o a shower is not attractive! Not owning a toothbrush is a negative 👎 now! No more blowing your nose in your sock! I can’t do it anymore!! 😩)
I’ve had my share of frogs 🐸 and I’m still not even looking for a prince. A Duke or Earl will totally do)
      😂🤣😂😂

      1. Lmao at too old for Y-A, I bet you still read it though! I’m far older than you Stephy and that is why I don’t read Y-A, I like my fantasy, dark, bloodstained and gory with shades of grey anti-heroes! 🙂

Eurgh, Disney Princess syndrome, film and TV lie to us all Stephy, sadly what we see on TV isn’t what can happen in real life. 😦 Can you tell I’m a jaded and cynical sod!

Yay, glad to see a women who doesn’t like abs on covers! I offer you respect for that! 🙂

Ha, I thought most people had a toothbrush, even if they don’t use it! And had a shower at least once a week but a sock to sneeze in?!? That’s just wrong!

Ha, no Prince and a Duke or Earl will do lol I’ll raise you on that and say all I want is someone who likes me for me!😢

    5. How does that song go?

🎶 She likes me for me
Not because I look like Tyson Beckford
With the charm of Robert Redford
      Oozing out my ears
      But what she sees
      Are my faults and indecisions
      My insecure condition
And the tears upon the pillow that I shed
She don’t care about my big screen
      Or my collection of DVDs
Things like that just never mattered much to her
Plus she don’t watch too much TV
And she don’t care that I can fly her
To places she ain’t never been
But if she really wants to go
I think deep down she knows that
All she has to say is when
      She likes me for me
Not because I hang with Leonardo
Or that guy who played in “Fargo”
I think his name is Steve
      She’s the one for me
And I just can’t live without her
      My arms belong around her
And I’m so glad I found her once again
And I’m so glad I found her once again
And I’m so glad I found her once again
Gazing at the ceiling as we entertain our feelings in the dark
The things that we’re afraid of
are gonna show us what we’re made of in the end
      She likes me for me
Not because I sing like Pavorotti
Or because I’m such a hottie
      I like her for her
Not because she’s fat like Cindy Crawford
She has got so much to offer
Why does she waste all her time with me
There must be something there that I don’t see
      She likes me for me
Not because I’m tough like Dirty Harry
Maker her laugh just like Jim Carrey
      Unlike the Cable Guy
But what she sees Is that I can’t live without her
And I’m so glad I found her once again
Found her once again Once again
Yeah I’m so glad I found her once again 🎶

Yup, I like you for you. 😊

    6. Ok, even though you’re a metal fan (which I originally guessed bc all my male friends are), you NEED to hear this song.
Totally 90s popular from Blessid Union of Souls and the song is “Hey Leonardo.”
Listen to it for me. It’s one of the songs I loved growing up, not just because it was fun to scream along with, but bc of the message!
On a separate note, you said you were older than me…how old are you, Drew? Bc I frankly find it hard to believe there’s such an age gap!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Well, I listened to the song and then had to listen to some metal! lol

Definitely not a song or band for me but yeah, I’ll give you that the song has meaning to it.

Ha, Stephy, asking a gentleman his age!?!?!?! I am shocked! Me, well, I am the grand old age of 35! 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

    7. Ok, I give you major points for bearing through that song. Definitely a 90s pop tune. So props to you!
I understand needing to cleanse the palate after that, lol! (I like Within Temptation and that’s as metal as I get besides maybe old Metallica lol)
35??? That’s it? You’re like, I’m older than you, Stephy? I’m freakin 34 over here. 1983, baby! So you’re not soooo much older than me. I just have kept my youthful good looks. Runs in the fam. My mom looks barely 40, and she’s 62. (Good genes plus chubby face equals eternal youth!)
So don’t give me that old man crap! ☝️😑 Not havin it!

    8. Well, technically I am on my 5th 29th birthday…but for semantics, I had to say it.
Ugh. I don’t feel this old. I feel 16 with the mind of a 60 year old.
See? We are practically the same age. So if you’re old then I’m old, and I refuse to acknowledge that.
(Mainly I like Within Temptation for the melody and vocals. I don’t even pay attention to lyrics unless I’m thinking of my own poetry as music)

      Liked by 1 person

    9. True. Without lyrics I couldn’t sing along in the shower or car. So I agree. 😂
Yes. You’re not old. Because then that means I’m old. So we will agree that we are BOTH not old. Good? Good. Settled then. 👍

  4. Happy belated birthday for last week! Your cake looks amazing!

McKinley has written some brilliant books, but she has also written some right dross. I loved Sunshine and Spindle’s End, and I think I’ve read Beauty and enjoyed it but yes. Some of her books are *really* bad.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. I have Spindle’s End as a beat up paperback I found at the library bookstore. I also have Deerskin and Sunshine (?) on my Kindle. Bc of Beaury as a kid, I bought a lot of her books bc I thought they would be the same style of writing. I’ll still give one a try: is there one you recommend above all others? I almost bought The Hero and the Crown, too!
I really want to like her books, lol! They are all mostly fantasy like I like! This one, though…I’m glad I see that others agreed with me on it! 😉😬

      1. I really liked Spindle’s End, which is another retelling. I must admit I can’t remember all that much about it, so I hope I’m not misremembering my enjoyment!

Absolutely tragic. Jeweltongue and Lionheart? No. Just no. I laughed out loud with your Rosehips McGee comment XD At least the other read was much more entertaining! And that cover is lovely! 😀

    2. Well, she usually gives you the next book right away, but I had two titles from her by accident, and that’s why I’m trying to hurry and read the next one. The one I’m reading now, Lose Me, is a contemporary, and it’s good, but I want to know what happens next in the other book! Argh! 😫😂

  7. Happy Late Birthday Beautiful! Sending much love ❤ I am so sorry I missed it.. although I am not sure what I could have done 😉

I am sorry that Rose Daughter was a miss, but at least No Ordinary Star pulled through. I always appreciate your honest approach to even the less than stellar reads. We can't win them all I suppose. But on the plus side, there will always be more 😉

    1. That’s right! There will ALWAYS be more!
Don’t worry about the bday: you sent me an ARC of Caraval and now I have a signed copy! So that’s a great gift! (Though books will never be turned away, lol!)
You have such a big heart. I am hoping (it just got approved) that my tax return will be enough to do a giveaway (besides the one from Dyan Chick next week) so that I can give back to all those who have given to me while I have had no money for books. It was supposed to be $1611, but apparently the state can take your federal if you owe them…even though I already had $187 coming back from state to help pay the owed balance. I’m hoping I didn’t owe more than $600 to them and that I get at least $1000. That will help significantly until I’m working full-time (either in Florida when we move or here if we somehow end up staying).
That will be the best birthday gift of all: thank you Uncle Sam! 😍🤞❤️

So sorry to hear about the McKinley book! The writing sounds really inaccessible 😦 I haven’t read that one, yet, so maybe I’ll just tiptoe around it for now lol Thanks for the heads up! At least No Ordinary Star turned out great 😀 Yay for SLUMP SLAYERS!!!

    1. Definitely! Yes, I’ll give her another try bc someone told me it depends on the book…and I own a copy others of hers bc I figured I would love her writing. Well, let’s hope a diff book is better, right? 😂🤞
The No Ordinary Star book really helped turn that disappointment around…though technically I had finished Rose Daughter a month ago and read some good ones after it. I just never got around to reviewing it…and then I read this shorter book, and I thought, “why not combine to take something negative and turn it to positive?” It worked out! 😉

  9. A Beast that stays a Beast forever… who wants him? not even Beauty I can’t imagine… haha.. unless Beauty turns into a Beast like that children’s picture book I read where the boy turn into a swan. Congrats on your over 1000 Twitter followers! That’s too awesome! And that cake! Looks like somebody couldn’t wait for a picture and already cut herself a slice eh? hahaha..

    1. Yeah and I was like, “NOOOO WAIT!!” But they already cut it, lmao!
What’s the appeal of a Beast man? But I guess the message is that she fell in love with him as a beast, so it doesn’t matter? 🤷‍♀️ I wouldn’t want to be in the bedroom with an animal!! 😳

      Liked by 2 people

  10. That sucks about the retelling! I adore Beauty and the Beast retellings so I would have been really disappointed. Also, the fact that he stays a beast even though he has a choice – I find that so weird lol.
No Ordinary Star, however, sounds like exactly the kind of dystopia I love. It sort of reminds me of this one series I read years ago where men and women were separated too, minus books being illegal and having to take pills. I love that they find a secret library. Plus, night sky covers are my weakness! They’re always so gorgeous. I am definitely adding that one to my TBR.
Great reviews, Stephanie! And happy late birthday! I hope you had a good one. 😊💕

    1. Thank you!! 😘😘😘
Yes, I recommend her older book, Beauty, but not Rose Daughter. Nope.
The book you’re talking about sounds like Brave New World. They take pills…but it could also be The Giver where they take pills for their “stirrings” and that’s prob the most read of the two in YA circles (Brave New World is more adult). I love dystopian literature. Even though it’s been maxed out, I still love it. My absolute fave. Under The Never Sky by Veronica Rossi is one of my fave series ever!
Bday was fun: no books but I just used my book mail as a bday present to myself! 😂🙌

      1. You’re welcome!! 😊💕
I was actually thinking about Eve by Anna Carey (I went searching on my GR lol). It’s this dystopia where girls are sent to a school until they’re this certain age and then they transfer to this other school only it isn’t a school but something way worse. They separate girls from boys completely and brainwash them against men while they’re younger. That’s about all I can remember but it was an interesting series and there’s a lot more to it than that but it’s been so long since I read it. It’s not all that similar to this but for some reason it made me think of it. 🙈
I’m starting to regain my love for dystopias. It was my favorite genre for a while until I got worn out on it. Under The Never Sky is one of my favorites too! I adore that trilogy.
Boo on the no books but yay for it being a good birthday. 😁

    1. Thank you! I did have s good bday. But it’s made more special by people like you. 😊
That’s kinda what I was thinking: I hated having the negativity so I put off writing the review…but having almost a novella-length book? It seemed wasteful, lol! So I put them together and I really like how it turned out.
      Thanks for stopping by. 😘❤️😘❤️

  11. Ohhhh Happy Belated Birthday!!! I do hope you had a wonderful book-filled day!! Got to admit that the first review was absolutely hilarious, but I do feel bad that you had to go through it! It really sounds bad and unoriginal. As for the second book -a nice little shift from bad to good- looks and sounds great! I’m glad to hear you ended up enjoying it! 😉

    1. Thanks so much for the bday wishes! I have everything I could ever want: a blog with friends who comment and like what I post, money (hopefully) coming from my tax return, and awesome book Mail that arrives and hasn’t been opened yet because I’m too excited lmao! I’m having a very good month. And my mom left for Florida on Sun, so I have the house to myself!
I had to get through the first one so I could say I’ve read it…ugh. The second one helped get me brighten up a bit!

    1. Yay! Confetti 🎉!!
It’s not that old. At least, not as old as me, lol! It was my birthday on the 8th, but I wrote this a whole 10 days later. (Time to post again…good thing I finished another book tonight!)
I’m really happy for you on your new domain, darling!

  12. Happy Birthday!!

I think that I would probably fall asleep reading that B&TB retelling as well. Too much description can sometimes wear on me. However, I am glad that you enjoyed No Ordinary Star. I haven’t heard of this one before, but it sounds super cute and I love the fact that it is a quick read. Thanks for sharing these. 🙂

    1. Thank you for seeing what I was saying about that first book! I was prying my eyelids open bc I thought for sure the ending would redeem it. It didn’t. I was so bummed. I even started reading it from the Overdrive library and then ran out of time so I picked up the physical copy at the actual library and I swear I slammed the book when I was done. I think I even said, “well, THAT was a waste of time!” 😂😂😂
I just finished another book by MC Frank. I’ll have the review posted!

The second book sounds interesting and that cover, oh that cover, I love it so much. Lovely reviews 🙂

    1. You’re good, Marie! You’re still in the month, and I think of my birthday as a month-long affair! 😂
Yes, the second book was so much better than McKinley’s. I just finished another MC Frank book and I’m trying to figure out how to write down my feelings about it. I loved/hated it, so I’m guessing it’s going to be a meh. We’ll see.
Hey don’t forget to visit soon for a giveaway…I’m really wanting you to participate! It will be fun and MY FIRST ONE! Yay!

  14. Happy late birthday, Stephanie!! Oh my God, how could I have missed it? T_T I’m so sorry! I hope it was everything you wished for and more ❤ (Your cake looks yummy and is making me super hungry by the way…)
Now this No Ordinary Star is more to my liking than Lose Me, so I might give it a try. It definitely sounds like something I would enjoy. Beauty… Eh, maybe one day XD I'll be waiting for that Friday Face-Off though 😛
    Great reviews, of course ^^
