My Review:

So, I was emailed awhile back by M.C. Frank, as I am a dedicated subscriber and Twitter follower, if I wanted to review her new book, Lose Me. Now, to be honest, I have only read ONE other contemporary book before, so I’m not a good judge here. I have realized now that this genre is so not my forté. This has nothing to do with Frank’s book…I just cannot handle the feels, the characters, the drama.

Does that mean this book was bad? No. Quite the opposite.

This book was very very good.

And I was in agony the whole time.

I think from now on, because of my gigantic heart and my emotional nature, I’m going to stick to fantasy romance. I just can’t do the feels: I was crying, I couldn’t stop reading, I wanted to smack the MC with the book but it was a PDF and she’s imaginary. Those are all probably normal “contemporary read” emotions, and I don’t think I can do that. I’m too much of a wreck inside.

So let me give you a run-down as to why if you’re a fan of contemporary books, this is a must-read.

Ari has a secret.

As a stunt girl for a new movie (a retelling of Pride and Prejudice), she must do extreme stunts. She’s trained for this and it’s her big break, doing stunts for a movie starring Wes Spencer, a big-time actor everyone watched grow up on “The Water Wars.” As a TV star and playboy, Ari doesn’t have a desire to be near him. But when an accident causes her almost to drown, it’s Spencer that saves her.

No one knows Ari’s secret: she has a ticking time-bomb in her head. Every day Ari reminds herself that she won’t die, and that she can’t bring anyone close to her into her illness. But Wes Spencer, the man she originally wanted nothing to do with, suddenly wants something to do with her. Ari does not understand: she’s nothing special, she’s not a movie star. She’s a stunt girl with a tendency to get hurt around one of the sexiest men alive. She’s not immune to his charm, and soon, she realizes that despite her desire to keep people from getting too close, Wes is already closer than he should be.

Before she knows it, everything comes crashing down. Wes knows there’s something wrong…but she can’t tell him. After the movie wraps, he’ll go home, and Ari will be in Corfu, alone with her illness, if even alive. She can’t put Wes through it.

But how can she push him away when he won’t go anywhere?

Apparently Wes needs saving as much as Ari does.

Is It Classroom-Appropriate?

Normally with YA reads I include this section. As this book is NA, I’m going to skip this. There’s no reason to even think of considering it for use in a school setting. So moving on.

Age Range:

I would say, with this being an NA novel, that 16 and up is best. There’s not a ton of inappropriate language, but there are some steamy scenes. Honestly, the scenes never get that bad, or else I would even go older. But I think it’s implied enough to where it’s best to err on the side of caution. Just know though that nothing naughty really happens like in some NA books, and this book does border on YA. I think the author was trying to be cautious and I respect that A LOT.

End Result:

This book gutted me. Ari goes through so much; Wes goes through so much. If you like character-driven books, this book is so for you. Yes, Ari drove me crazy with keeping Wes away, but I’m thinking that’s maybe what happens when you go through what she went through. Many of you know my feelings towards Kestrel from The Winner’s Curse series. I have the same feelings towards Ari. Kestrel always thought she was doing what was best for Arin, even though she was torturing him. Well, Ari does the same thing.

I get where she is coming from, I really do. But I can’t STAND characters like that…the ones that keep secrets for “the good of the person” when it’s obviously making things worse. So I’m thinking I’m not a contemporary girl. I’m glad I read this because I couldn’t put it down and it was so good…but it was an emotional roller-coaster. Straight-up feels City.

You think you’ve been there? NO, YOU HAVE NOT!

Not until you read Lose Me.

And you know what?

IT. CAN’T. I’m too easily broken for feels like this.

Little story to tell you: when I was younger, I was addicted to these books by Lurleen McDaniel. They were all about someone who was dying and I couldn’t stop buying them. One of my favorites was Too Young To Die (I think it’s been rereleased recently). Now I’m not saying that this book is like those, but when I was younger I just couldn’t get enough. Now, I’m a little more fragile. I’m a little more sensitive. If this book had broke my heart, I would be shattered on the floor. It didn’t, thank goodness, but I would.

So because of the quality of the story and not how feel towards contemporary, I give Lose Me ★★★★☆. Mainly because it deserves every one. So that takes me to my rating System:

If you like to feel…if you like quality literature…this I recommend to you.

If you are faint of heart like me, just be warned, “You will feel.”

You can’t avoid it, my friend.
So that’s all from me on Lose Me. I’m currently jumping back into my comfort zone with Long May She Reign before Overdrive snatches it from me. Whatcha reading? Are you excited for my upcoming giveaway? (It’s coming….dun, dun dun!!)

Same Bat Time, same Bat channel, my blogger bunnies!! (Old TV Batman reference to all the young’uns out there, lol!)

  1. Great review for this book Stephanie. I really enjoy contemporary books but fantasy is always going to be my number one genre (along with any of the other genres that fall under fantasy; sci-fi, paranormal, etc.) I think the main reason is I agree with you I’m not normally a fan of the whole keeping secrets for the good of the other person trope. Sometimes it’s written really well and I don’t notice it as much but when I do I just want to scream at the characters ‘Will you please talk to each other?!’ I’m guessing that’s how you felt with this book at times. 🙂
Still great review, and even though contemporary isn’t your main genre it’s still great you gave this one a chance, and it seems to quite enjoyed it as well so that’s great to see! 😀

    1. You got me….that’s exactly what I was doing! I was like, “Just tell him what’s going on!” It drives me crazy. Then again, I shouldn’t judge bc who knows what I would do in the situation? If my life was a story and someone was reading it, I’m sure someone would be trying to slap me right as we speak. 😂👋
But I think you would like this. It was a strong book. If you are all about the feels, this is a book for you! I think I need the buffer of science fiction or fantasy so that the feels are interrupted by action. Or magic. Or something. Otherwise it hits so close to home. I’m like crying my eyes out and saying, “why won’t someone do this for me?” When in the case of a fantasy book, no one would do that for me bc it’s not realistic! 😂🤣
So you get what I’m layin down. I’m so glad!

      1. I guess we don’t know what we’d do in that situation. I guess when it seems like you read it in every book you pick up, or the majority of them, it just gets too much you know. I think also as we get older we lose patience for things like this, I certainly feel that’s how I feel you know?
Well in that case I’ll add this one to my to-read list and try to get around to it at some point, I don’t need the buffer of sci-fi or fantasy, and I think I’ve read some books that are more full of feels so this may not be as bad. 🙂
Don’t worry, I get what you mean! 😀

    2. I knew you would! You always get what I mean!
Yeah, I completely agree. We aren’t like that anymore…do you remember all that teen angst? It’s all gone! I try to explain it to teens but I wouldn’t have listened and I’m sure as hell they won’t listen to me!
Yeah it’s a feely feels kinda book. I was a little perturbed at the Insta hate-to-love but it was understandable in the extreme instances. It definitely made more sense as the book went on.

      1. I’m not sure I had a lot of teen angst, then again don’t most teens think that, but yeah it’s pretty much all gone now. I guess that means I don’t have a lot of patience for it in books anymore either.
As long as it was well written I don’t mind feely feels books, guess I just need I check it out and see what I think myself! 🙂

    3. I think teen angst is a big turn-off for me…but it’s in a lot of books and I usually can ignore it and just think, “Well, they’re a teen, and that’s why they feel this way.” But in contemporary books, it seems that teens tend to be more angst-ridden than usual. But then again, I have only technically read two (count em two) contemporary books. So I’m no expert, lol.
If you do read this, I will warn you that the copy I received had tiny errors. Not big, and it was an ARC. So I don’t think those will continue on with the published book. I’ll know for sure when it arrives (one of the cool things Frank does is send you a physical copy of her book as long as you read and review the copy she gives you, which is SUPER generous).
She is a doll. I’m glad I liked the book and I’m hoping many others will too. You let me know if you love it!

      1. I guess in a lot of YA contemporaries teen angst seems to be a way of moving the plot forwards more often than not, and yeah it’s never really something I enjoy but most times I can see past it. I’ve read more than two contemporaries but I can definitely agree with your assessment there Stephanie!
Oh that’s fine. Most times I don’t mind little errors and tend to look past them without noticing. It’s when there are big errors that I’m bothered but you would have mentioned that in your review if it had been the case with this book. 🙂
        I definitely will! 😀

Omg I don’t think I could read this book lol. For one, I don’t like crying…I will avoid movies and books that will make me cry, because once I get started I don’t stop. This book looks really good though and your review is awesome. But yet, I prefer to stick to fantasy romance (even though they can tear you apart too). I just prefer things that aren’t in the real world lol.

    1. Yeah, me too. I do like me some unrealistic romance. But I cannot deny that the book is good.
Thanks for liking it! I really love it when someone likes me Reviews. I want them to know exactly how it made me feel and convey it in a way that’s entertaining…I know some reviews can be boring. So it always makes my day when someone comments and likes it!
I’m reading Long May She Reign now and it’s definitely my element. I’m not usually a contemporary reader but I like to support my friends. And I’m glad I read this in s way because I can help M.C. spread the word about her book.
If you really like fantasy, I have a giveaway coming up on the 28(?) I think…it’s for a great book and I’m really excited bc the cover is gorgeous (I’m a big coverwhore lol). I hope you’ll be there! 😘

No worries! Yeah reviews can be a bit tougher to get people to read, I actually tend to read more reviews of books I’ve read before and I’m not sure why lol. Ooooh I’ll keep an eye out for your give away 😊😊

      2. That’s what I do as well…but I’m very fortunate to have ppl like you come visit and comment on reviews like this one! You’ll have heard of my next book for sure!
Giveaway coming and it’s my first so I’m really excited! I think it will be fun bc a lot of ppl will still benefit even if they don’t enter or win (you’ll see! Eeee!)

    1. Awww!! Thank you! It means a LOT to hear that. It’s hard to express the way I was feeling when I was reading it…I was like, “NOOO! Give me my heart back! You can’t have it!”
      😂🤣😂😂
Makes me so happy that you said this!!

  3. Your reviews are so hilarious! And that’s why I prefer contemporary romance over fantasy romance (I’m sorry! I’m not a fantasy person since I forget half the characters and subplots!). Don’t worry- I have the same feelings. Is it bad I’m sometimes tempted to burn a book if I just despise it? Or I want to burn a character verbally when watching a TV show and he’s evil? I literally sometimes feel my heart hurting- that really did happen once! I was like “Oh my heart! It hurts!”

    1. Nope! I feel the same way! I wanted to bitchslap Ari so very very much.
I’m so glad I make you laugh with my reviews. I want my writing to be an extension of my personality. I want someone to read my review and be like, “Oh, that Stephanie…she’s so crazy!”
I want my reviews to be picked from a lineup: point and say, “She did it.”
      😂🤣😂
I hope that means mission accomplished! 😉

    2. Well, I’m glad you think I’m funny!
My only trick is this is exactly how I talk in real life. I am a writer by heart so that might help my “voice” come through a bit louder, but I think as long as you write what you would say, you’ll have a great personality! I have already seen yours shine through, so I think you’re good, honeybun! 😘

    1. Thank you! I do hope you like it. MC writes extremely well and has this ability to make you connect with the characters. She’s really passionate about her books.
I am now getting a chance to read my fantasy again, which I need to get my feels back in the right place. I need a reset!! I don’t know if I’ll be able to read some of the contemporary books I got from Kindle sales now!! 😫

  4. Great-great Review, Teach! I’m a sucker for emotional wringers sometimes.. well.. often I think I’m a bit emotionless, even though I have no issues with empathy but I read a contemporary now and again with such themes to just give my heart a kickstart… This reminded me of a series I read where the character had cancer and i was just bawling and bawling and I couldn’t stop reading and then I ended up in a mood slump for days… just horrible 😀 But.. on the other hand, it’s a great book that manages to take the reader’s heart and put it through hell.. it means it was well written, relatable and engaging.
I’ll take note of this one when one of those days comes agan when I feel I need to give myself a downer 😀
I hope you’re feeling like the ‘case is closed’ now after writing the review… however I’m quite sure the story will stay with you for some while yet.

    1. Oh, yes…it will stick with me like aftertaste. Ugh.
I keep thinking about it. It makes me get all emotional again.
I remember those old McDaniel books and they did the same thing to me. It gutted me. This one did too. I’m a big softie though. I cry at commercials. Once I took a personality test that said I had antisocial tendencies (essentially a sociopath) and I told my mom, and she laughed and was like, “YOU? No way!” Because I cry in movies and with books. So I guess I have a heart in there. Somewhere.

Your synopsis makes this book sound soo dang appealing Stephanie! Lol The stunt artist thing sounds awesome! But I always feel the same way about contemporaries as you do: “PLEASE DON’T BREAK MY HEART”!!!! 😭😭😭

The “poor communication” trope kills me, too, especially in adult fiction. Adults communicate, peoples!! Lol But even in ya, I don’t want to watch a relationship blow up because of faulty communication. I think contemporary does rely on that trope quite often.

We in the same boat, sista.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thank you! That boat we’re in, I think it’s just us two! Seriously it’s like ::grabs MC and shakes:: “COMMUNICATE, BITCH!!”
Argh. So frustrating. And the “misunderstanding” trope where they think someone hates them when it’s obvious to us they love them?! Wtf! If we can see it (and I know these characters aren’t real, so I’m not crazy lol) then why can’t you see it? 🙃
I’m reading Long May She Reign now and it’s cleaning my heart of the leftover feels that gunked it up, all up in my arterieses! (That mispelling is on purpose: means to sound like Art-er-ee-ses)
Man, communicating in person would be so much better when I want to make a point, yo. Sigh.

Lol yes, BE ADULTS! Use your words!! I’m so glad to hear that Long May She Reign is helping heal the heart though 😘 Like you said earlier, the sff genre breaks up the emotional tension with other cool stuff, almost like a buffer. I like being able to think about how the magic or tehcnology works, or at least feel a sense of wonder about the world, in addition to the emotional feels related to the romance and other relationships.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Exactly! I need that buffer, man!! I really do! Otherwise I’m like straight up pulled apart. Like drama movies. Love em but sometimes you need a good crazy action or comedy flick to help not think OR feel, lol!

    1. Thank you, hon! (I don’t ever read NA and honestly I thought it was YA going in…I really didn’t see much of a difference as most NA I have read has had graphic scenes and this didn’t).
If you want a good feels-y contemporary, then this one would be a good read! I really like her writing. 😊

    1. You’re welcome! Yes, I never knew how I would respond to contemporary YA, but I had a feeling this was why I was avoiding it, lol! At least I can say with passion that it definitely makes you feel!
I had to read a fantasy to cleanse my mental palate so I finished Long May She Reign from the library because Overdrive was about to take it from me….and that was a letdown coming from this one. So hopefully my next read will be a nice romance-y fantasy, just like I like em! 😂🤞

P.S. Love the old Batman reference! A++++ for integrating Batman in a NA romance review!!

  8. I’m like you, I can’t take too many feels hahaha I just don’t do drama very well, especially if one of the character is either ill or dying… Yeah, not for me at all! So I probably won’t be reading this one. I read very little NA or contemporaries as it is, but I will on occasion pick them up if they interest me enough.
I’m glad you could still enjoy this, despite it not being your thing at all. It shows how good a book is. So that’s great news ^^
    Awesome review, as always 🙂
