So I love Entangled Teen and have been a fan of a lot of their books.
Black Bird of the Gallows by Meg Kassel is a beautiful book – you know me and my cover obsession. And they reached out to me and offered me a chance to review it!
I’m totally noticing a theme with birds by the way with current book covers…but I love it!
Here’s a little about the book to whet your appetite (if the cover didn’t do it for you like it did for me!)…
“A simple but forgotten truth: Where harbingers of death appear, the morgues will soon be full.
Angie Dovage can tell there’s more to Reece Fernandez than just the tall, brooding athlete who has her classmates swooning, but she can’t imagine his presence signals a tragedy that will devastate her small town. When something supernatural tries to attack her, Angie is thrown into a battle between good and evil she never saw coming. Right in the center of it is Reece—and he’s not human.
What’s more, she knows something most don’t. That the secrets her town holds could kill them all. But that’s only half as dangerous as falling in love with a harbinger of death.”
OMG, right? I AM AO EXCITED TO READ THIS!!
Now part of this exciting review opportunity is an chance for me to share an excerpt, and then invite you to enter the giveaway: Entangled TEEN is offering two hardcover copies of the book as a giveaway!!!
But first…the excerpt. (And I’ll be posting two reviews of my own shortly because I’ve been on a reading binge…but I wanted to share this first):
I’m seriously questioning the wisdom of coming here. Who is this boy? Who are these people? I may not want these answers. Whatever illusion I had been weaving about this being a normal family can’t be true. This is a family, yes, but one putting on an elaborate show to appear to be something they are not. “Everyday life can’t be so bad,” I say lightly, eager to change the subject before I start luring myself down a hole. “You have a beautiful home, a nice family. You’re popular at school. Kiera Shaw certainly likes you.”
He turns his gaze to me, slowly. “Kiera Shaw? You think I like her?”
“I don’t know what you like.” I don’t blink. I don’t look away. “I know only what I’ve seen.”
Reece leans close, gently entering my personal space. Close enough to put me on edge, but not close enough to intimidate. His voice is silk on gravel. His narrowed eyes glitter down at me. “And what, exactly, have you seen, Angie?”
Shivers race up my skin. I want to defuse this so badly, but I feel like this is a challenge I can’t lose. “I’ve seen and heard things that don’t make sense. Things I can’t understand.” I shift my gaze to my crow sitting on a branch above my head. It watches me with an intensity that would scare me if I wasn’t accustomed to it. “Tell me about the crows.”
He shakes his head. “Sorry. Either you know about them, or you don’t.”
My jaw tightens, even as I step toward him. I can feel his body heat. His clean, guy scent fills my senses with a unique magnetism that draws me close. Closer still. “I will find out.”
His gaze sweeps my face, lingering on my lips. “I hope not.” His breath warms my temple, sending a shiver under my skin. “There are worse things out there than a few watchful birds.”
“Like what?” I’m breathless, damn him. My words are barely audible.
His lashes fan low over his eyes. The narrow space between us crackles with tension. “Oh Angie, you don’t want to know.”
Now I hope you’re as excited as I am to read this book. I really hope you are.
So here’s a chance to win the book for yourself….cause I love offering giveaways!

I’m drooling over the cover! The only thing I can think of that’s worse than being watched by birds, is to be surrounded by hungry sharks!😱

Oh, gosh, be careful what you say or the next thing we know, all the covers will have SHARKS on them! 😂🤣😅

I just read a book called Shark Island that did exactly that! I honestly don’t know why I do these things to myself!😒

Ahhh! That would be like seeing Sharknado! I couldn’t do it!
Jaws still gives me the creeps. My sister used to tease me that there was a shark at the bottom of our pool, and we had a black tile pool so you couldn’t see the bottom…then she would do the “dun-na, dun-a,” faster and faster like the Jaws music!
I have a huge fear of sharks ever since. I feel you.

I’ve been terrified of sharks since I was 10 and my parents brought my sister and I to see Jaws. In retrospect it probably wasn’t their most brilliant ideas because for that entire summer I refused to go in the water at our weekend trips to the beach. And I know what you mean about the pool. We have an in ground pool, (although it’s thankfully not black tiled), and a few times after we were first married, I had nightmares about swimming in it at night, and being attacked by a shark!😞

Oh at least you can see below you! Our pool was in AZ and my mom thought it would keep the pool cooler to do black tile – and it did…but as a kid and the pool going 9 feel deep? I stayed in the shallow
end 99.99999% of the time! 😂

I don’t blame you! It sounds so creepy! There could have been sharks, alligators, God knows what! I’m stopping now before I give us both nightmares!😱

I am on the fence about this one, so I am looking forward to your review! On one hand, the synopsis does sound good. But on the other… bird books and I do not always get along, so I will be especially curious to hear about how bird-y it is 😉

But is it just me, or are all the books getting Birdy lately? Lost Crow Conspiracy, An Enchantment of Ravens, THIS ONE, and others I’ve seen that I of course can’t think of right now! It’s like the birds have come out and everyone wants em! Why birds? 😂🤷♀️
But I a, intrigued by the synopsis and I don’t mind ever having a pretty book cover to stare at…man, I’m such a coverwhore! 😟

Oh this sounds really good Stephanie, and the cover is gorgeous enough that even without the intriguing blurb and excerpt you posted I’d be tempted to read it just for that. I’m assuming the giveaway is just for US people, so good luck to everyone who does enter, I’ll wait until this book is released in the UK! 😀
Slight off topic but the second picture of the crow you featured in this review, the one just after the end of excerpt my first thought was ‘oh, so cute!’ 🙂

I know!! Crows are everywhere now and I used to be creeped out by them, but now I’ve become desensitized and I almost love them now!!
I hate when there’s themes in covers but this bird theme is really kind of cool.
I hope it’s released in the U.K. soon – I saw you guys have one book called Blackbird I think…I saw it from the YALC hauls?

Makes me wonder what the next theme in YA covers will be? I mean it’s hard to guess but at some point something will topple the crows from the top of the list. 🙂
Yeah I have an ARC for Blackbirds, I think it’s a different Blackbirds to this one you’ve reviewed though.

Oh, yeah it is. I was talking a trade with someone in the U.K. and I looked it up. WAY DIFFERENT. But I think the next trend with be POC on the cover, and you’re already starting to see it now. Even Susan Dennard’s new book has a black main character. Julia Ember’s book, though it is drawn, has an Asian character. Then, I don’t know what’s next: we will have to see! 😂

I’m starting to notice it as well, more POC models and characters on the front cover. It’s great to see because it’s another kind of diversity we need in books, as well as POC characters in books POC models on the front of books. 🙂

I agree: sometimes trends can be beneficial! I hope the next trend is a good one…I’m always interested to
see what’s next. For awhile I also noticed abstract covers were popular. We will have to keep our eyes open!
