My Review:

I feel like I haven’t written a review in FOREVER! Luckily, this is my last week at the crappy job. I never have time to read and I’m always tired, and I miss blogging so much. When I get home I just fall asleep: I’m sure many of you have been there before! But I refuse to take a hiatus! This is my blog and I’ll blog if I want to…or something to that affect. I’m not going anywhere…and my posts will get closer together. Come hell or high water, they will.

But, as usual, I digress.

I’ve had Blood Rose Rebellion for awhile: first from Netgalley, then from a physical ARC. I’ve wanted to read it so bad, but there’s been so many indie authors that have come my way, and you know I have a hard time turning down the indies. Now, Lost Crow Conspiracy is coming out soon, and I knew I had to read this book. And I’m glad I did.

Here is the gorgeous cover that I coveted for so long:

So pretty. I love how they also had a white one, too…but the blue one is the version I have.

I’d own both if I had the space. They are just so gorgeous…and you know me and covers!!

Ok, but let’s get into the real of it….the review. I know the book has been out awhile, but I know some of you haven’t read it yet!

Anna Arden is a Luminate. Unfortunately, she is unlike other Luminates in that she has no magic. None. She is stuck sneaking kisses from the man she loves, a powerful Luminate, while her sister has magic and a ball in her honor to introduce her to society. But when Barren Anna breaks her sister’s powerful spell during her coming-out ball, the Circle instantly want her. They want to know how she was able to break her sister’s spell when she has no magic.

Instead her family whisks her away to Hungary to protect her. While living there with distant cousins, who make poor look envious, Anna finds herself face to face with the Romani (gypsies) that live nearby.

And she discovers that not only the Luminates have access to magic: apparently the Romani have a way of “illegally” attracting and using magic, too. And Barren Anna wants to know how.

As Anna finds that she is falling for Gabor, the Romani boy who she is forbidden to love, she tries to keep her distance. Others try to use Anna for their own means: if she can break her sister’s spell, she might be able to break The Circle’s hold on magic…she could make magic accessible to everyone. But is that the best thing?

Though long and very detailed, Blood Rose Rebellion will suck you in until you know what will happen to Anna and the magic that is kept only for the elite.

Is It Classroom-Appropriate?

Yes and No. The book is steeped in history: it mirrors the rebellion in Hungary during the era and mimics the attitude of revolution. There is a large parallel with the only difference being magic as the root cause for Rebellion vs the desire for freedom. These are positive aspects and would make a great tie-in with a history unit that covers the geographical area and timeline of Hungary’s history. The only caveat? The book feels REALLY REALLY long.

The book stands at 424 pages, and that is a pretty long book for classroom use. It’s steeped in educational material (foreign words, fashions, and attitudes of the era); Anna is a strong character and the supporting cast are interesting enough. The flirting between Anna and her distant cousin (on his end) might gross the students out, but it was also a common occurrence at the time: not only for powerful families, but regular ones as well as the “cousin” wasn’t considered too close to the family tree.

I would give Blood Rose Rebellion ★★★☆☆ for classroom use. You could use it, and it’s almost a four star recommendation, but the length brings it down to a “there are better options” rating, in my opinion.

Age Range

Finally, a book in the Lexile! Blood Rose Rebellion gets a 750L, which means it is definitely a book a reluctant reader could understand. However, the length of the book would have me urge teachers and parents to stick to a high school setting. Though Harry Potter was long and had a higher Lexile score, Blood is drier and therefore harder in the patience department. In many scenes, nothing really happens. This would probably bore younger readers.

Also, the Age Range is suggested at 12-18+, and I find no problems with the material to dispute that. It isn’t like many that are rated 13-17, so this does suggest that an older audience will appreciate the book more. I would stick to 14 and up, but if you have an advanced younger reader, there is no reason to keep this book from the 12-14 lot.

End Result:

I enjoyed the book though it was REALLY LONG. I had to take breaks to get through it and it felt like I was never making progress. Normally, that would turn me off a book, but Blood had something that kept me going…and I can’t really put my finger on it. I guess I could just say it was an interesting concept. I wanted to know more about the magic classes and how that worked, but I’m hoping there will be more of that in the sequel, Lost Crow Conspiracy. Fortunately I do not have to wait long to find out. I have a copy of the book coming and I’m eager to see what happens next.

I honestly have to give Blood Rose Rebellion ★★★☆☆ because it kept my interest and I wanted more. I would recommend to patient readers who are fans of alternative history. And of course fans of longer, more literary books.

And as my battery is dying, I must bid you all adieu. Don’t worry, for a have another review all ready to go, so you will see me sooner than you think, and I promise this next one will be an interesting one. So please stay tuned! I won’t ever let you down!

  1. I liked this book, but I had recently read A Shadow Bright and Burning, and in some ways the books were too similar for me to really enjoy both. I also thought it was kind of long and maybe the pacing could have been tightened.

    1. Yes, it was LONG!! That I completely agree with you on! And I haven’t read Shadow…it’s one I have been meaning to read.
I am hoping Lost Crow will be a little faster paced…I know it was very detailed but we don’t need so much. I would have preferred more detail on the Magic system – like the Coremancers vs the Elementalists and etc.

  2. I happened to really enjoy this one but I totally agree that it sets a pretty slow pace. I’m usually more into the exciting action-packed books but I guess the subject of this one won me over 😄
Great review! I’ve missed you here in the blogosphere!

    1. I’ve missed you too!! Never again! I hate going so long without posting and seeing you guys in my comments! I have a lot of make-up blog hopping to do too!
This one was a good one. I have moved to a faster paced book now so it’s a nice change. I couldn’t read one slow one after another…I think I would go crazy! 😜

  3. Welcome back Stephanie, and great review as well. 😀
I have Blood Rose Rebellion on my to-read list but it’s not a book I’m really interested in so I haven’t bumped it up my to-read list so I can get started in it right away.
I’m glad you enjoyed it though, and glad the heaviness of this book was worth it despite the struggle to get into it at first. I hope you enjoy the second book even more! 🙂

    1. I am really looking forward to the second book! I hope it’s less heavy… But I guess if it’s not, I can get through it again. 😩🤷‍♀️
Yeah, it’s not one I would suggest you have to move up on your list. It’s definitely more than three stars bc it’s interesting- but it’s slow. Very slow.
It’s nice to have such a warm reception back! I hate waiting so long in between…my heart tugs and I miss my comments from you! They always make me smile. 😊

      1. Maybe now the world has been set up in the first book it will be less heavy. That’s what I’ve found sometimes.
I’ll leave it until I’m properly interest then. That’s what I do with most books on my TBR list to be honest. 🙂
I’ve missed you and your posts Stephanie, and yeah I hate having to take a break from blogging as well. 🙂 ❤️

    2. Yeah, the story world is pretty developed so I would love a faster pace in the next one. You have read some pretty good titles lately and I’ve been dying to read the posts – this is why I hate falling behind.
Man, I feel like I am always talking about falling behind with you, but what is behind really but an arbitrary guide we put on ourselves? Hell, if I want to, I could just decide that I’m ahead! 😂😂😂
No more stressing about it, right?
I wish it were that simple!!
I’m just going to have to carve more time out for me. It maybe is that simple! 🤔

      1. I’ve been getting through a fair few books that’s certainly true. 🙂 And yeah I get what you mean, if you wanna say you’re ahead why not? Sometimes I feel I’m behind when it comes to drafting posts but I know I’m not, it’s just what I think.
We all need some me time every now and again. 🙂

    3. Yeah I’m not going to beat myself up anymore! If I don’t have a review, I’ll post a cover double. I’ll post a discussion. I’ll post SOMETHING. But I am almost done with another book: it’s just hard to read after work.
The good news? After Sun I’m down to 3 days/week at my crap job and I’ll be subbing until I’m back into the swing of things and can dump the crap job all together!

      1. Sounds like a good idea. I’m thinking of setting up a schedule for my blog, it’s about time I have one. I do also have a load of drafts saved so if I ever don’t feel like writing a post I still have things I can post. It’s been a great help for me. 🙂
That is good news! 😀 I bet you’re looking forwards to being able to dump your crap job.

    4. Oh I’m so looking forward to it!!
You have drafts written? That’s amazing! I just write and post. I should totally do that.
It’s strange I haven’t ever scheduled a post – I’m afraid I’ll do it wrong, lol! But a schedule would be nice. I like making sure I post at least every 3 days!

    1. We WOULD be great friends!!
I watch a lot of cartoons lately (Amazing World of Gumball and Teen Titans for relaxing, Simpsons when I need comfort). And I love The Walking Dead and Supernatural, though I’m behind.
I love comedies (Superbad is a classic and I just DVRed Megamind bc I have never seen it). I also love Superhero movies and cool indies. Pretty much whatever makes you laugh. Also LOVE science fiction – did you see Cloud Atlas? It was so good! And I want to see that sci fi with Mila Kunis…but my mom hates sci fi. And fantasy. She made me watch Gold with Matthew McConaughey – it was good but I don’t plan on watching those types of movies.
      What about you, my gal?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I like Family Guy, lol. We loved The Walking Dead until Negan showed up. We haven’t watched since, but we love Fear The Walking Dead.

I like fantasy, horror, and sci-fi movies. I think I have seen the sci-fi with Mila. Does it have Channing too? It was good! We just saw It yesterday and I laughed. It takes a lot to scare me.

I love Supernatural, Teen Wolf, Doctor Who, Buffy, Roswell, Wynonna Earp, The Fosters, Dark Matter, and The Night Shift for shows.

I like action moves like The Expendables. Sci-fi movies like Maximum Ride, and horror movies like Insidious. I don’t enjoy crude comedies, but liked Easy A and House Bunny. And I love a great feel good family movie!

        Liked by 1 person

    2. Omg House Bunny was adorable! So was Easy A! I was talking about the one with Channing! Is it Jupiter Ascending or did I just pull that name out of my ass? 😂🤣
Anyway, I use to watch a lot of FG but it got a little gross. Simpsons is so wholesome in comparison…but if it’s on, I watch it. I have several seasons on DVD. That and American Dad. I LOVED The Cleveland Show!
I just stopped when Negan showed up. I haven’t watched the new seasons with him. I’m sure it prob jumped the shark. When I heard about Glen, I was pretty pissed. I DVRed Fear but my mom wouldn’t watch with me, and I like watching shows like that with someone…I use to watch it with my ex, and then I got my mom into it…that’s why I haven’t watched Supernatural. I need someone to go, “WTF??” with me!!
I plan on starting Once Upon A Time again – I watched and liked the first season when it was on TV. There are so many things I want to watch but with email, blogging, social media, reading, and working…well, it’s hard. But we def have similar taste!!
A good book I read lately? I love my friend Dyan’s series called Heir of Illaria and I also enjoyed The Monster of Selkirk. I am reading Heart of Mist right now and then I need a good science fiction again. But I have to read Black Bird of the Gallows for my review slot.
Don’t you wish there was more time in the day? 😅

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yes, those two movies, even though they were slightly crude, they weren’t as bad as The Hangover. I hate movies like that! And I think that was the name. It was really good!

I hated what they did to Glen!! Yeah, FG gets pretty bad sometimes, that why I don’t watch every episode, lol. Girl, you just need to get on that Supernatural horse and keep going! Best show ever! ❤ Those are my boys!!

I bought Heir of Illaria but haven't gotten to read it yet. We do need more time in the day!! I really want to read BBotG soon! I want to read Wonder Woman soon too!

        Liked by 1 person

    3. Well, I’ll be starting BBotG soon here, but we could always read WW together?
I know…Reading time is sooo limited! We need at least 8 hrs of just dedicated reading time/day. Anything less is so unfair.
Yeah…I think I’ll get back on the Supernatural train.
Get this: the ex I was just talking about? Dated for 6 yrs, dumped me and missing for two…then he messages me out of the blue! I just saw him yesterday. He left me for a chick that died! I missed him like crazy but it was a trip. Don’t know how that’s going to go…if it’s a friends only thing or not. I guess we will see? Life totally takes you in weird directions, huh?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I am totally up for reading WW together!! You just let me know your time frame and I can follow it. I can’t remember if IG or Twitter was easier for you to message on? And we totally need to figure out how to live without sleep!

Yes you need to! So we can fan girl together!!

Life is so weird and sometimes things happen that are meant to be. Not the death, that is very sad, but maybe he is back for a reason?

I am all about reading the mixed review books! If they have tons of the same reviews, then where’s the adventure? 😂
Jk! But I am glad I gave it a try: I usually can tell when I’m going to like a book or not…sometimes I’m surprised but I’m an easy touch. I like a lot of diff kinds of books.
I will warn you that it’s long and it might be a good book to read while reading another or having a lot of spare time! 😂😉

I am normally used to it but I think it’s because I’m working and have less free time now. Books this long used to fly by for me. Now it’s days and days and it sucks!
I’m looking forward to Lost Crow – are you going to read it?

I’ve been meaning to read this for so long. I love alternative history books, especially when it includes magic/fantasy elements. It’s good to know that it’s quite long though. I can get so intimidated by long books that I end up putting them off forever lol
I also just noticed that WP had unfollowed you so that’s why you just got a notification that I followed you lol First Twitter and now WP, smh. Apparently, the internet just wants to separate us, hahaha.

I’m so glad you didn’t unfollow! I don’t get to post as much as I used to, but I always read yours bc I get them emailed to me. You have a rockin’ blog as always and have encouraged my TBR on more than one occasion!
This one is def a good historical fiction but is long…it would be a good one to read while reading something else I think.
Glad you said hi! I can’t wait to see what you think. 😘😘😘

  5. Girl I can totally relate to being so busy & tired at night that you just fall asleep. That has been my life story as of late. I had to take a blogging hiatus in August, but I missed blogging so much that I just couldn’t stay away.

I love books that draw inspiration from history! This sounds like such a good premise, BUT it also sounds a bit dense… the kind of book you need to be in the right mood for.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yes! That’s exactly how I would describe it – like literary fiction. Definitely not light reading.
I know – sometimes I fall asleep sitting up. I hate it because I never get to read anymore. But it’s nice to know someone is in the same boat as me. 😘
Especially with someone that seems like they have it all together so well! ❤️❤️❤️

  6. I hope that you’re getting through that last week at work okay, you can do this! ❤
That was a lovely review – I'm sorry to hear it was a bit, well..quite long, to read. I'm curious about this book's premise, but I'm sometimes having a hard time with alternative histories kind of thing. Oh, I'll have to think about it all 🙂 thank you for sharing your thoughts about this one 🙂

    1. Thanks for the support! I’ve been sucked back into the place…though I’ve been subbing I am also still on the schedule for my old job! It’s like they don’t want to let me go. 😫
This book is def one I would push more on fans of adult literary historical fiction with its pacing. So if you skip it, no big loss. I am reading one now that I think you might like though!! Hopefully I can get this review up ASAP! ❤️❤️❤️

I am looking forward to the second book too, I really did enjoy this one. Great review, one of my friends follows you and I guess now I have to as well since she raved about your reviews!! I am currently reading Book 1 of Makenna Snows series, the book is The Children of Neptune. it’s got a strong female lead, and that for me is a win!

Really interesting to hear about this one, thanks for reviewing. I like that the author uses a historical backdrop outside of the familiar Western European.
