SJM and Bardugo Events!!

Hello, guys!!

So many of you know that I got double lucky and had Sarah J Maas AND Leigh Bardugo come to my state this past month. Besides dying of eternal happiness, I got tickets to go right away. As many of you know, there aren’t many authors that come to Michigan…and we get TWO PROLIFIC ONES??

I had to go to both.

First, let me talk about Maas.

Sarah J. Maas – September 14th, 2017 @ Schuler’s Books (Grand Rapids, MI)

In case you live under a rock or aren’t a YA fan (which, if that’s the case, I would be surprised if you read my blog, but whatev), Sarah J Maas is the author of the Throne of Glass series, as well as the famous A Court of Thorns and Roses series (ACOTAR, ACOMAF, ACOWAR). Here are some of her books:

The Throne of Glass series

The ACOTAR series

She just released a new book in the Throne of Glass series:

The book is gorgeous and it is all about a side character, Chaol. Though I haven’t read this series, I wasn’t going to pass on a chance to meet the queen of YA!

I went to Schuler’s Books really early: the event started at 6pm and I got there around noon!

This was how the event started…looked pretty calm and I got a good seat. I found out that they were expecting 500 people!!

Five hundred people! 5-0-0!! That’s a lot of people in a bookstore!

This is the size of the event from where I was in the front, as it was standing room only.

We got to mess around with Snapchat filters and use her stamps to stamp our books since only 50 lucky people would get to meet Sarah personally.

Playing with the filter

Makenna and I

Then there was this cool backdrop so I took advantage of that!

Some people dressed up, so I asked them to pose with me. I think they were surprised by my choice of poses…

Way fun.

Then Sarah came on stage and was interviewed by a fellow blogger (I can’t remember who it was…I’m so embarrassed!)

The Queen herself

Sarah and the blogger

She discussed the ring that meant so much to her and some of her family history…they were part of the Holocaust and a family member KNEW Elie Wiesel (author of Night). As someone with a Jewish background, this made me want to cry. It was a moving story.

The event ended when the 50 lucky people got to meet her (I not being one of them), and I made my exit. I got my book, a keychain, and some stickers, and I went home. I wish I could have had my pic taken with her, but at least I got to go and see her.

Now….it’s Bardugo Time!

Leigh Bardugo – September 30th, 2017 @ Schuler’s Books (Grand Rapids, MI)

So Bardugo is known for her “Grishaverse” – a Universe she created with the characters from her books. She has written the Shadow and Bone series, as well as the Six of Crows duology, and the Wonder Woman standalone that will be part of a superhero series. She was there for the release of her book of short stories, The Language of Thorns.

Recently, the books have had a makeover, but I am a fan of the originals…

I know I’m the minority in this, but I miss the Russian elements of the first books.

Here are the books of the Grishaverse:

By the way, if someone has that bookmark and doesn’t want it, or wants to swap for it, I would be more than happy to. Look at it: it’s freaking beautiful!

And I cannot forget Wonder Woman

Anyway, I got to this event a little later since it was estimated at half the size…250 people!

Two hundred fifty people is still a lot of people, btw.

My vantage point

Bardugo was late because of ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, so I took some photos of people dressed up.

Dressed up and bearing roses

When she arrived, it was once again standing room only.

Then the lovely Miss Bardugo arrived!

She was a lot of fun, and she let us bring FIVE BOOKS to get signed, and we were allowed one to be personalized (I chose Language of Thorns of course).

Leigh and I

Though I wanted to get some buttons for friends, I was reminded (by Leigh herself 😳) that it was one per person. So I got my missing Witch pin and a set of enamel pins to go with my set from ALA.

I didn’t go back in line, so I got Six of Crows, Crooked Kingdom, Wonder Woman, my Wonder Woman ARC, and my copy of Lamguage of Thorns signed. I was fine with that and went home a happy girl. (I also picked up a couple books that I shouldn’t have spent money on in the used section).

How was your month? September was pretty rockin’ and I had a blast meeting two heroes of YA!

Now I’m off to sub at Oakview Elementary, so I I hope you all have a blessed day! I’ll end with some geogeous art from the Mist-have Lamguage of Thorns….

You MUST own this book!

    1. They WERE fun…I still wish I could have just taken a pic with Maas. I think instead of 50 people meeting and signing, they should have let all of us take pics. That’s all I really wanted. But Bardugo was so approachable.

  1. –A Court of Books–

Wow you’re really lucky! It’s hard to see author for me as I live in France. I’ll go to Germany next week to see Cassandra Clare, but that’s basically everything ^^

Sarah J Maas will soon be in London, but the train and plane tickets were too expensive so I’ll have to pass for her :/

    1. Oh, I’m sorry! I have a friend who is going to that…but if it makes you feel better, it’s very rare to actually be one of the people to meet her. I felt like I was watching something that I could have seen in a podcast. The benefit was the book and the stamp.
I think Bardugo was awesome. I do hope you enjoy Clare! I haven’t read any of her books so I’m not a fan, but I think I should!!

  2. That is amazing you got books signed! I loved the Wonder Woman movie so I’m curious to see what the book is like, I’ll most likely borrow it from the library! I’ve never read any of their books, I couldn’t get into ACOTAR, and Six of Crows is in a narrative format that I can’t read.

    1. I haven’t seen the movie – but I am eager to read her book. And I haven’t read ANY BARDUGO so I feel totally like I’m missing out…I need to read Shadow and Bone now that I have it.
I read ACOTAR and I loved it but I still need to read the rest of the books. I think I’ll like ToG too possibly. 🤔

    1. Thank you!! I wish I could have met Maas – she is so pretty and well-spoken. Bardugo kinda intimidated me tbh. She seems so cool and I felt like a fan girl nerd!! 😂
I need to meet more authors so I can get used to the experience (I feel like a total dork) but I truly want to send you the signed bookplates I have for you bc I thought that was a brilliant idea: it only costs the cost of a stamp! So when I go to the PO tomorrow, I’m going to mail them out. You’ve done so much for me. 😊

      1. To be totally honest, of the two, Leigh is a way cooler person to meet, so I’m really glad you got to meet her. I totally was a fangirl nerd, but I’m okay with that! We’re out of town right now, but I’ll mail your stuff out when I get home too. ☺️

    2. Yeah, Bardugo did seem really cool. Sarah is just so put together that she seems cool to meet.
Are you having fun out of town? I’m doing the YASH scavenger hunt – it takes SO LONG but there’s so many books!! 😂
I didn’t know you had anything for me! Thank you for thinking of me. ☺️☺️☺️

    1. Thank you!! I was so lucky – normally I can’t afford a new book and I had to buy the book to attend the signing. But Maas and Bardugo? I HAD TO GO.
I just wish I could get my hands on that gorgeous wooden bookmark, right? Have you seen it?? 😍❤️ Pure love!! 😂
I need to read more of their stuff. The Language of Thorns book is SO PRETTY. I don’t even want to touch it!! 🤣

    2. Aww, you’re seeing Bowman?? That’s awesome!! I have Sorrow’s Knot, Vengeance Road, and Retribution Rails, and I read The Scorpion Rules and loved it (that’s all her, right? Or am I getting confused?)
Sounds like it’ll be a blast!
Oh, I love Fairyloot! I wish I had money for the Nov box…it’s going to have TWO books, one an ARC for like Summer 2018! I’m so jelly, I’m jam!! 😍😍😍

      1. I have tried SOOO hard to get an ARC of Retribution Rails!! I have to hope that my pre-order comes in time and then I will have to stay up all night reading it, lol!! Vengeance Road is the only one I have read by her and I LOVED it!!

  3. Oh wow these both seem like incredible events, and your pictures are amazing as well Stephanie. I can tell you had a brilliant time. ❤ I'll be seeing SJM myself when she comes to England in November, and I can't wait, and one day I really really hope to be able to meet Leigh Bardugo as well. 😀

    1. I hope you get to be one of the lucky few who get to meet her in person. She’s so hard to meet one on one.
Bardugo was so real. It was nice to see her interact with everyone and she really is so creative! I wish I could be her, so cool and collected. Maybe one day…
I can’t wait to see your post about your Maas signing!!

    1. Oh, that does have to be rough. What’s the closest area the authors come to? I know most of ours end up in Naperville, IL, which is still out of state. Sometimes they go to Detroit.
I know Maggie Steifvater will be doing a free appearance in Detroit in November and I might try to make that – though it’s like 3 hrs away on a good day.

    2. You’re right: it is always worth the drive. I love it when it’s at Schuler’s because they at least have used books to look at – I would be spending way too much money killing time in a B&N or something!
I think I bought Daughter of the Burning City, The Thousandth Floor, and Glass Sword for a little over $20 in HC! Such a bargain there! And it kills time while you’re waiting forever lol.

    1. Thank you! Yeah, in terms of visiting authors, this was def the month. My mom only wanted me to pay to go to one, but I explained to her that it’s rare (if ever) that I will see these two authors in my home state again! I love the SJM stamps too…they were gold and blue, but I used the gold on like, every one of my books! 😂

    1. Yay!! Glad you liked it! It was a nice change from a book review and I had to share the fun. I really like going to these things bc I get to see my bookish friends that live so far away: I need more close book friends! 😫

      1. Yes, it felt like if I was part of your adventures 😀
I totally get what you mean with having close book friends :c It feels like they are everywhere but at the same time nowhere. Dont know how to explain it better hahaha!

  4. That is SO AMAZING!!! I absolutely LOVE both of those authors and I’m so happy you got to meet them both! SO JEALOUS! haha (: I’ve met Leigh Bardugo before but she’s one of my absolute favorite authors so I always try and go to any of her events if possible (usually not very possible haha oh well) but I’ve yet to meet Sarah J Maas and I’m desperately waiting for her to tour nearby!
I loved reading your post and seeing all those fun pictures! Thank you for sharing!!

    1. Thanks for reading! I wish I got to meet SJM. Just being in the same space as her was awesome – there was a fan that was super creepy and wanted to like, smell her and breathe her air…so I get why she limits her engagements! 😂

  7. What an awesome post! I love all the great pictures. ❤
I'm a Michigander too. 🙂 That's so great that you got to meet two authors you enjoy so much. Like you said, we don't get the opportunity all that often around here. 😛
I would love to get to meet Leigh Bardugo one day though. I absolutely adore her writing.
The Language of Thorns was really good, and the artwork was so gorgeous.
