My Review:

I just love the covers of these books in this series…so hauntingly beautiful…I had to make a Bookstagram pic even though my artistic resources are limited at best…

Here’s the book cover in all its glory:

See…now THAT does the cover some justice. Just want to own all these books: each cover is a work of art. And my pics cannot compare to this.

But enough of my #coverlove. I’m obviously obsessed. And don’t want to part with my library copy. And would literally have this hanging as a poster in my house. But enough about that…

So, if you haven’t read The Sin Eater’s Daughter, surprisingly, you will still be okay reading this review! Because though it behooves you to read the first book in the series, this book does not pick up with the same character the first book left off. Twylla was our protagonist in The Sin Eater’s Daughter. In The Sleeping Prince, we have Errin.

Errin has been paying the rent with the sale of potions, some harmless, some deadly. Though she is not a licensed apothecary, she studied under a well-renowned apothecary back in her hometown of Tremayne. However, once her father died, Errin had to pack up with her mother and her brother Lief and move to Almwyk. Almwyk is a place people go to disappear.

Lief left to help the family but hasn’t come back…and Errin and her mother are all alone. Actually, Errin is practically alone…her mother had been in a haze after Errin’s father’s death (I really wish she would just spell her name Erin bc my spellcheck is going nuts with the double Rs), and after wandering in the woods, she has returned with the Scarlet Valruv, a disease which turns her mother into a beast every full moon.

Now that The Sleeping Prince has awakened, and the country is sealing off the border, Errin and her mother need to move; there’s only one problem: people have been quarantined and burned alive in their homes when thought to be infected with her mother’s illness. And the licentious landlord offers for Errin to stay…for a price. But Errin has no intention of following through…if she can dope up her mother enough, they both can flee, but only after the full moon has passed.

But Errin is out of time.

So she turns to the one man that can help, the mysterious Silas Colby, her sole customer and man whose face she has never seen. But one day, while gathering herbs in the forest, Errin returns to her cottage to find Silas in her home…and with the door unlocked to her mother’s bedroom. Silas knows she’s ill…and he’s been hiding some secrets of his own. When Silas promises to take Errin and her mother with him to safety, she expects the secretive man to follow though.

But when Silas disappears before they are to leave, Errin must take matters into her own hands. And she’s going to track Silas down because she knows he is the key to saving her mother, and that’s all that matters.

Is It Classroom-Appropriate?

Oh my goodness, yes! This story has it all…and it can be read as a standalone! It’s not complete of course: there’s still a The Scarecrow Queen which I am eagerly awaiting, but it’s a book similar to The Sin Eater’s Daughter where the story continues in the same world, and the characters are connected, but the stories don’t depend on each other. They can be read alone and continued later. I would love to use this with the amazing writing, the fantasy elements, and the twists around every turn (and I mean every  turn).

Scholastic has a list of themes for the classroom and I think I could find all sorts of benefits to using it. It’s like a fairy tale but richer and it deals with sacrifice, poverty, and strength. I could see it making a good anchor text for a unit. I know I want a classroom set!

Age Range:

Lexile.com marks it at HL800L, making this more for the high school reading level (or advanced junior high reader). It’s recommended for 14-17, but I could see 13 and up being an  appropriate age range. There’s no swearing or sex, and the battles aren’t bloody or macabre. It’s rated with the HL (high-low) designation, which usually means though a younger reader can understand, it’s best for an older audience…but I’m not seeing why it’s designated this way unless it has to do with the intricate plot. I find no problem letting someone even my niece’s age (12) read this. It’s amazing.

End Result:

I give this ★★★★★! (Btw, I’m thinking of coming up with a meme for my ratings since most people don’t see my star rating explanation at the bottom of the page, so that’s coming…it’ll make my ratings a little clearer). This book was great! I cannot find a single problem, and I was glued to it the entire time. This one is already on my favorites shelf on a Goodreads. I find Salisbury to be a talented author who knows how to weave a story full of surprises. If you haven’t read The Sin Eater’s Daughter and you’ve been lagging on picking it up, I heartily encourage you to read that and this book.

I’ll be requesting an ARC of The Scarecrow Queen as soon as I find it available! I cannot wait for the final book! And there’s a free short story called The King of Rats that explains more of the “mythology” of the story…count me in!

What are you reading? I’ll be reading nothing until I get all my homework done, seeing as this is the official last week of school and finals are next week. So if I’m a little absent, just remember it’s only until the end of next week.

And I graduate December 10th! Whoo Hoo!

  1. I want to read both of these so badly! I keep putting the series off due to my pile here, but I may cave soon. Your review is fantastic 😊 I am intrigued that it doesn’t pick where the first ends. And I also happen to be a big fan of the cover 😉

    1. Isn’t the cover just (sigh) breathtaking? 😍
It does kind of pick up where the last one ended, but you don’t know that until later in the book…all you know is that The Sleeping Prince has been awakened, and you can’t tell how long it’s been since the first book. But there’s a surprise that comes later that ties it all together! That’s what I love about this series! I was disappointed at first that it wasn’t from Twylla’s POV, but I’m now attached to the new character! And Silas! Yummy! 😉
      Thank you! 😘

  2. Great review for this book Stephanie, I read The Sin-Eater’s Daughter ages ago and really enjoyed it but then never picked up The Sleeping Prince for some reason. I’m definitely going to need to re-read the first book before starting this one but it sounds amazing, you have definitely convinced me to move this book up my to-read list!
Also I agree the covers are gorgeous, all three of them together look amazing so I really want them together on my bookshelves at some point! 😀

    1. Oh, me too! I’m sad to give the copy I have back to the library! I wanna keep it!
Thank you! Yeah, it took me a min of Googling the first book and rereading the ending to understand where I left off…but the good thing is that the story is told from a diff POV, so technically you don’t even need to reread it! Trust me: it gets to a part where book one and two kinda converge, and for someone like me who had forgotten a lot of book one, it was quite a refresher! I think you’d be just fine! I’m serious when I say that. (That and I really want you to read this book ASAP! Lol).
I know your taste I think, and this one is a no-brainer. You’ll love it. Good stuff.

      1. This is why I end up buying all the books I love, I just never want to give any of them back it away to anyone! 🙂
Honestly most books are like that in a way, and normally there are series that carry on from one another that I jump straight into, but others I like to reread before you know? I can’t remember anything about The Sin-Eaters Daughter so I’m definitely thinking it needs a reread!
Thanks Stephanie. I hope I love it as well! 😀

    2. Well…yeah, if you don’t remember anything about it, it might be a good idea for a refresher, lol!
I do hope I get to buy all the books I love one day: my Bookoutlet order came yesterday (faster than I thought), and I can’t wait to open it up and see what’s inside!
Don’t be surprised if I’m a little absent the next couple days…I have to write three more papers, memorize a Shakespeare monologue, and make a presentation…so I’ll be a little absent until the weekend. I just wanted to let you know since I respond to your comments the quickest (tbh). 😊

      1. Yeah I’d just feel as if there were references I was missing, and I don’t know if I’d appreciate the whole story if I couldn’t remember the first one at all.
Ahh bookmail is always exciting, honestly though I just love getting parcels. Even if they aren’t for me if I see an Amazon package in my porch I get excited! 🙂
No that’s all right, take your time with all your schoolwork and everything. I guess if you have things like that going on blogging is going to fall in the wayside a little, but it sounds like you have a lot to do so good luck getting it all done. We’ll still all be here when you get back! 😀 ❤️

    1. You will LOVE it. I know you will! This is as good, if not better, than The Remnant Chronicles! (Kiss of Deception, Heart of Betrayal, etc). I liked it as much as The Lunar Chronicles, and that’s rare for me!
I hope you do read it and love it.

    1. I had to wait, too! But I guess only for the sequel. I’ve got to return it because it’s super-overdue now!
I guess I can’t complain about the wait if you haven’t even gotten the first book yet! That’s ridiculous! ☹️

    1. Yes, I enjoyed it immensely and I think it’s even better than the first book. I don’t know why so many didn’t like the first one: I’ve seen rave reviews and I have seen pans, but I think people are too picky nowadays about their books. The cover is gorgeous and the story telling is A+… what more could people want? 😉

    1. I hope you love it too!
It’s exciting but because it’s happening before finals and I have so much to do, I’ve barely thought about it! I think it’s weird that they do it before we finish our classes, don’t you?
And my dad comes into town tomorrow…but I have a monologue to finish memorizing and a presentation to make. Luckily, all but one of my papers is done! 😊👍

    1. I’m not sure…I don’t think there was enough buzz for the first book. The Sleeping Prince came out this year, and The Sin Eater’s Daughter I believe last year…I remember seeing the cover and just had to check it out, and then I loved it and waited for the next one forever! The Scarequeen Queen I know people are waiting for…so I’m thinking it just didn’t get enough buzz when it came out. But people know of it and I think they should give it a try because it is just so cool. Reminds me a bit of The Remnant Chronicles in a way.
With The Sin Eater’s Daughter, the premise is she is poisonous to touch, so she serves as the Queen’s executioner. I couldn’t pass that up, you know? 😉

  4. I love this book and The Sin-Eater’s Daughter! I’m glad you did too 😀 I can’t wait for the next book, I’m intrigued to see how it goes now both books have been brought together. Though I might need a reread…

    1. Well, depending how long it takes for The Scarecrow Queen, I might need a reread too! I had to google the first book so I could reread the last couple of pages and remember what happened!
But the twist at the end of this one…oh, I’m so excited! I used to love Leif and hate the prince, but I have totally switched ships now! I downloaded the short story, The King of Rats, to see what that’s about. I would love to own every book in this series bc they are so pretty!

      1. I’ll have to see how many pages it is because my eyes trigger an instant migraine if I read on screens for more than about 10 pages. It’s quite annoying (and also the reason my blog hopping sessions never last too long, ugh)

      1. I’ll have to give it a try. I’m going to see if it’s going to be published in the paperback of the next book though first, because they quite often are and that’s much easier for me!

    2. Well, apparently it was included in some special versions of The Sleeping Prince. Wish I had known about it! But good point…you never know when they’ll include something with a release, and I would def buy the next one!
