My Review:

I am so glad this book is being rereleased in the US. Apparently it was published by HarperCollins AU and now is coming to the states on Oct. 4! And guys: this is truly a good one. I know I write a lot of high ratings, but if I could give this book a ten star rating, I would.

Let’s not keep you in suspense any longer then!

The book starts out with Maggie: she’s a ruthless, blackmailing b****. But there’s a reason she’s doing what she’s doing: she’s trying to save her dad.

In the world to which we are introduced, Pheratech rules. Pheromones rate people through their M bands, a band that everyone must wear at 18 that syncs with a chip ar the base of the spine. If someone rates high with another person, people couple up. The tech knows, right? Secretly many look for their true match: a rating of 100% compatibility that means soulmate status. Those that find their “true” match are rare…and practically celebrities.

The inverse, however, are the negs. These people rate negative with people at least four times a month. And since most people wear their tech all the time…well, alarms sound the minute a neg is found. They are the castoff of society. For you not to rate well with anyone means you’re bad. Empty. And you’re taken to “rehabilitation,” which Maggie already knows doesn’t exist. Rehab is really prison…and eventually death.

Maggie’s father one day rated neg. And since he was taken away, Maggie’s been trying to find him. She will find him, no matter what it takes. Even if it means blackmailing the son of M Corp’s CEO. Maggie gets him to rate neg when they’re fitted with their new Pheratech at the 18 year old fitting. She covers for him, knowing that he recorded three negatives, and if he gets a fourth he’ll be the shame of his family. Maggie uses Disruption, a pheromone transmitter that registers negative results to others’ M bands. Maggie says she can get him doses of Disruption to keep his “neg status” masked…but  for a price. She need Mercer blood (the manufacturing family of M bands), and Quentin Mercer definitely has it.

But what happens when Maggie grows a conscience? It’s always been there…but as she gets to know Quentin, and sees the hopelessness in his eyes, her tough facade starts to crack. She couldn’t possibly be falling for him…could she?

Is It Classroom-Appropriate?

So much so that I’d like to use it in a lesson plan. It’s original in its premise…we have a strong flawed character trying to fix her broken and poor family, and the “rich boy” that supposedly gets what he deserves. We have pheromone technology that’s supposed to replace love. We have a future society where negative ratings make one an outcast…and a secret disposal center that no one knows about: the negs are “rehabilitated” and given new identities, right? Our protagonist is flawed but has a moral compass she tries to ignore. She’ll stop at nothing to save her dad. This book shows exactly what can be shown with dystopian literature; it can be used to warn, to educate, and to prevent. I give it a definite plus for classroom compatibility. Think of the discussion questions!

Age Range:

The book “hasn’t been released yet” (though it has in Australia), so there’s no Lexile score. But I would recommend 13-17 (and up, of course). There’s really no inappropriate scenes…the swearing is mainly the b-word…and that’s rare. I think the material is perfect for high school readers. Great even for advanced middle grade readers. I wouldn’t hesitate to give this to my own niece, and that’s only when I feel very comfortable with the material. So I give it the gold star of approval! πŸ‘

End Result:

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…! (Lol, I know that’s not possible). Seriously though, it gets a full 5/5 from me. I was so desperate to read the next book that I bought the Australian version! I need to know what happens next. Corruption, the conclusion to Disruption, comes out in March. (You guys know how cheap I am…that’s how good this book is! I paid full price!)

Please give this one a chance of you’re a fan of dystopian YA. You won’t be disappointed.

Here’s the original AUS covers, since I have a LOT OF AUS friends…

And here’s the US covers…

Love them BOTH! Happy Reading!

    1. Yeah…I’ve been giving a lot of five stars and I think it will make it less impressive just to give it five measly little stars: it needs 10 big ones!! It’s so up my alley I paid full price for the sequel in Australia so I wouldn’t have to wait, lol! I NEVER pay full price for a book!! Didn’t even use my gift card!!

    2. Well, I bought it with an Amazon AUS account and it worked, because it’s not available yet to us…in the US, I mean. It was $7.99 USD, but was listed as $9.99 AUS, so I actually got it cheaper. I never pay full price for books as you know, so you know that I must’ve REALLY liked it to get the next book instead of waiting! Lol. πŸ˜‰

  2. Awesome book review Stephanie! I’m glad you enjoyed this one. I don’t know but I’m torn between the AUS & U.S. covers, usually I love one more than the other but not in this case lol. Sounds like an interesting YA Dystopia with a refreshing take & I agree that it would offer up many points for discussion in the classroom. I hope you enjoy the sequel just as much πŸ˜‰

    1. I hope so, too! I’m so glad I was able to buy it and not have to wait forever for it. (I’m impatient, but once again I thought I would read it right away, and it’s now waiting on my shelf while I read books that are overdue, lol).
I’m so eager to get into the classroom and discuss fun YA that kids can relate to! I’m so done with working retail and never getting to do what I’m going for.
Thank you for the kind words. Warms my heart. 😊

Love when you get excited about books! I do the same when I love a book so much! This one has a lovely cover and I love the bit about the mc doing everything she does in order to save her father! πŸ˜€

    1. I’m an excitable book nerd. I can’t help getting overly fanatical about a good read, πŸ˜‰
I think you’d enjoy it because she is a strong character. I know you like your mysteries, so I can tell you there is a twist at the end of book one, and I think it’s worthy of your eyes.

    1. I know…I saw the original covers, and they were kind of strange. I think this one does it justice.
It’s really original for a “traditional” dystopian trope. I’m in love with dystopian novels and have found many to be repetitive. She is not “speshul,” she is just tough and not willing to give up. She’s likable because she’s real. And NO love triangles…no insta-love! I think I’d read more from Shrivington. I look forward to see what’s coming next!

  4. This book sounds amazing! The fact that you rated it so many stars as well is making me want to go out and pre-order a copy right this second!
I haven’t read many dystopian books lately, I seem to be on a bit of a dystopian slump, but maybe this will be the book to reintroduce me to the genre!
    Great review! πŸ˜€

    1. Thank you! You may not need to preorder…I think it comes out this month? I’m not sure…
I think this one will definitely get anyone out of a slump. I mean, pheromones for dating? Love it! The true match that makes a man kill another man to be with the woman he rated as soul mates with? Ooh, what a world to live in…what a book!
I dug this. I dug this a lot.
I would dive right into book number two if it wasn’t for others waiting patiently for my attention. Lol. πŸ˜‚
Hope you do end up giving it a go!

      1. I’ll look it up either way, preorder it if it isn’t released and order it if it is. It sounds amazing, and yeah definitely an interesting premise as well so I can’t imagine it failing to get anyone out a slump!
It’s always great when a book makes you want to dive right into the second one isn’t it? πŸ˜€
It’s on my to-read list now so one day, hopefully soon, I’ll be able to get around to it! πŸ˜€

    2. It’ll always be there: that’s what I love about books. Sometimes there are books I’m dying to read, but there’s always something I’m looking forward to. You just add it and when you get a chance, check it out. You know if it ever goes on sale I’ll let you know, lol!

  5. where negative ratings make one an outcast…good thing you rated this as high as you did eh? πŸ˜‰ (OOOOOH, SO BAAAD!) I like the idea of pheromone tech in general actually. My love life has the spring of a dead bird lately (yes, I’m married πŸ˜‰ ) and then I wouldn’t have to worry about it anymore at least. I can’t decide which cover I like most, they’re so different yet all very nice! Eeexcellent review! πŸ™‚

    1. Excellent! ::tents fingers::
I hoped you would be pleased, Boss!
Yeah, I could use some pheromone mojo myself. I think I’d willingly join this world, unless I was a “neg,” which I probably would end up being. Since I am so difficult and perfect. πŸ˜‰

    2. Yup, better eventful and cast out, then boring and part of the “in” crowd.
Nah, just kidding. I want to be cool. Where are the popular girls when you need them?
There they are! “Please let me join!! I can’t bare to be special. I want to be ordinary just like you!”
See, I’m going to write a book that focuses on the opposite of the “special girl” storyline: she’s boring and plain and no one likes her. The End.

  6. I haven’t read this book yet but I’ve actually thought about it because the premise is SO interesting (though also ??? at the same time for me because it reminds me a bit of maybe Matched or Delirium in that the dystopia revolves around love), and I’m glad you love it this much! I’ll definitely be checking it out soon. πŸ˜‰

    1. Yeah, the main character is nothing like the chick in Matched or Delirium: she’s strong, she’s a bitch, and she’ll plow over anyone that gets in her way. I love her character, and she makes ME want to be strong. She’s no Katniss Everdeen trying to be noble: she just wants her dad back, and she’s willing to do what it takes to get him,
I think you’ll like it. If not, you can cyber-slap me! πŸ˜‰

Yes! It’s so unlike the traditional dystopia of girl is speshul and saves the world. Yes, she isn’t fond of the world she lives in, but it’s not her priority. Her dad is. And I love that, because it’s realistic. How many ppl really try to be heroes? Not many! We all are looking out for our loved ones first, and society later!
I think you’ll enjoy, but I want to know what you think!

  7. What kind of magic ritual did you perform to get approved on Edelweiss πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I’m really glad you enjoyed this though!! The series has been on my TBR forever. I’ll definitely have to bump them up because I’ve been hearing so many great things recently. Fantastic review!!

    1. It was such a surprise, and the only approval from them!
I did get Fear The Drowning Deep, but only bc it was a Read Now! I was super surprised.
I still have requests pending, and I still CONSTANTLY get denied. This lady must have taken pity on me. We are friends on Twitter now, the author and I. She’s super nice. She probably had a hand in my approval!
